I am working on a 8N for a friend. The hydraulic fluid was a caramel color and very thick. I have had it draining for several days with the hydraulic pump, pto shaft and the two other plugs removed. I plan on using a sprayer with diesel fuel or kerosene to rinse out the housings. Then after a few days of letting the cleaner evaporate putting everything back together and adding the correct trans fluid GL-1 Mineral oil. Is there was another cleaner I should use that would be better and still mix with the mineral oil ? I realize I will have to run it to get the fluid hot and change it again but since it is almost $100.00 for 5 gallons I do not want to do this to many times.

Thanks, Rodney

Well if you read your Owners Manual you will see the "proper" oil is mild EP gear oil grades SAE 80 or SAE 90. That is NOT GL1

So what your telling me is the Traveller brand Ford Tractor Transmission Fluid Mineral Gear Oil sold by TSC is the wrong stuff.
Copied off their web site.

Traveller 2 gal. Ford Tractor Transmission Fluid Mineral Gear Oil. Designed specifically for Ford tractors built between 1939 and 1952, this mineral gear oil helps reduce friction and improve fuel economy. The oil comes in a 2 gal. bottle and is suggested for use where a mineral gear oil SAE 90 API GL-1 is recommended.

Recommended as a multifunctional lubricant for Ford tractors built between 1939 and 1952. SAE 90 transmission fluid is specifically designed for final drives, hydraulic systems and manual transmissions. Oil helps reduce friction for excellent protection against engine wear and optimum fuel economy. Suitable for use where a mineral gear oil SAE 90 API GL-1 is recommended. Includes 2 gal. bottle of tractor transmission fluid

Note: This product is not recommended for modern transmissions, differentials, wet brakes or final drive gears; use Traveller Premium Universal Tractor Fluid for such applications

WARNING: This oil contains no additives; misapplication or use in modern equipment may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm.[/quote]

I am telling, you that API GL1 is not an EP gear oil. And I am also telling you that with the exception of war time when it was reserved for military use Ford specified mild EP gear oil in all N-series tractors.

e-mail sent.

I had to pull the pump because I could not get that drain plug out on the tractor. Someone prior to me had boogered up the plug. After some work with a grinder and military words I got the plug out. The transmission and differential plugs came out fairly easy.

I appreciate all the information but guy I am doing this for is on a budget so a rebuild is not an option. I have the operators manual and the FO-4 shop manual. I will clean it the best I can and go to the next project.

Email me. My Document is for doing a basic on-a-budget job without pulling the pump and replacing all the parts with an expensive kit.

Mineral Spirits is an excellent petroleum based solvent with multiple purposes including cleaning and dissolving grease, dirt, and grime and will not harm internal engine, oil, and hydraulic systems. It is the same 100% stuff used in paint thinner and charcoal lighter fluid as well as up to 99% of the main ingredient of most all 'snake oil' products like MMO, STABIL, KROIL, STAR-TRON, TECHRON, and many other products. Review your MSDS sheets if you doubt. Also, a 50/50 mix of Acetone and UTF works well too. There are THREE drain plugs on the underneath of the tractor for trans/hyd oil. The first to drain is the NPT plug on the diffy case. It has a 9/16 Square Head and is often hard to loosen as many have never been removed since birth. Work your way north to front of engine with the other two. I highly advise you consider performing an total rebuild. Chances are the tractor has never had one. A basic draining probably won't do much good as it is. Chambers are likely gunked up, worn, and some wear parts need replacing like the Safety Relief Valve and Cam Follower Pin. I'd replace the cylinder and piston as well which requires you pull the top cover. Your Owner's Manual, I&T F0-4 Manual, and a Dealer Service Manual are required reading and reference to do the job. It is one of the toughest jobs to PM on the tractor, time consuming, and can be pricey depending on what you want and can afford to do. A complete rebuild kit can cost at least $500. Evaluate you situation and proceed from there. I wrote a document 20 years ago on rebuilding the 8N hydraulic system so if you want a copy, my email is open.

I filled mine with 5 gal of diesel, ran it for about 5 minutes, operated the hyd system, shut it down and drained it. What comes out, comes out. what doesn't can mix with GL-1.

There is old oil and dirt trapped in differcial that wont bother anything. Wash out best can put together and run it.
