King Kutter finish mower question

I've got a King Kutter 6 ft. side discharge finish mower. It has a chain that goes from the top link section of the A frame down to the back of the mower body. As you mow the chain goes slack and flops around. Am I missing something or is this just how it is? I have been hooking a rubber strap to it and holding tension on it so it doesn't hit the gear box.

just how it is. i just let mine do its thing.

OK, just wondering. I bought it used a few years back and went through it replacing wheels, a spindle and belt then painted it. Looks so nice I hate to wear the paint off of the gearbox with the chain flopping. I have plenty of rubber straps, so I just hook one to the chain and the belt cover to stop the flop. Strap comes in handy when I disconnect to suspend the shaft and keep it off the ground.

ah, there's the difference. i got mine used too, but i never painted it, so the chain has nothing to wear off. i used to use a rubber strap for the drive shaft too, but my N is a dedicated mower so a few years ago i made enough room to park it inside with the mower still attached over the winter. i don't miss hooking it up and dropping it back off.

I'll have to look for a bicycle tube that I can slide over the chain.
Funny how spoiled we get over dropping and hooking implements that we buy another tractor. I have 2 and was thinking about another.

It's normal. A finish mower is moved by the tractor but it follows the ground. Therefore, the top link must be flexible enough for it to articulate front to back and follow the terrain. My Woods finish mower has a fixed frame, but the top link mount pivots, accomplishing the same thing.

You need one tractor per implement, plus one extra tractor just in case. Additionally, you barn/shed space for all of them.
