So now my 9N has a winch and a trailer hitch

My poor old 9N just got saddled with two new chores:
I got tired of manually hauling firewood up from an arroyo. There are four 5/8" bolts attaching the winch's base to the tractor's front axle. ... so, as long as I don't try to drag something heaver than the 9N, I should be OK.

This one was a brain teaser. I want to tow a small trailer around the property. The three point wasn't happy with the ball coupling, so this is my answer:

I applaud your problem solving, but the area around the pto on your 9N is not designed for supporting weight or pulling from and if too much load is applied you could tear that area right out of the rear end housing. That areas only job as designed wa to mount the check chains for the three point hitch. The Yesterdays Tractor website sells a drawbar lock that prevents the drawbar from rotating if that was the problem your three point coupling was having with the ball hitch.

(quoted from post at 20:12:18 05/25/23) Here is an example of a broken 9N rear housing that used a mount very similar to what you have.

Here is an example of a product unfortunately no longer available from Windy Ridge but will give you an idea of a rigid mounting that allows use of an 8N swinging drawbar kit. Maybe you could make something similar yourself that mimics the Windy Ridge idea?

A 3-point receiver hitch works well for using a ball mount to tow a trailer. Add sway bars to reduce side to side swinging. Here is a link to the type of hitch I am talking about. I am not saying this is the one to get, it is just an example, there are many of these that you can choose from.

3-point receiver hitch

3 point hitches don't have to be rocket science! Mine is simply a Ford drawbar, a couple pieces of angle iron & an old car trailer hitch piece:

Winch looks nice but holding the tractor still while winching anything might be the trick. I don't want to be sitting on a tractor inline with the winch cable pulling something heavy. 4 cyl compression and old drum brakes might not stand much pull.

If you don't want to purchase a manufactured receiver hitch, you could modify the receiver socket you have. Make it bolt to the holes in your 3-point drawbar (center it on the drawbar) and add an upright to it for the top link to pin to, along the line of what Lynn Patrick posted. Then you can easily swap to different hitches. I have one like that that we use all the time to move trailers. Pin, ball, pintle, shackle, or clevis type hitches, just swap the hitch mount in the receiver.

I made a simple triangle from some scrap 2x 1/2 steel that was laying around. It has the top for the link and pins for the lift.
Chains keep it in position for safe use without raising up when slowing down. A little cutting and welding, but not much else.

Could tie the hitch to a tree and see which end gives out first.
