Gallons per hour.. average?

A question to help me size a new gas tank and figure out where to put it....

At working rpm, how many hours can the 8n run on a gallon of fuel? I know it depends on engine load and other factors... I'm just looking for ballpark number.

The work I will be doing most of the time is turning compost piles and manure piles on level ground. Run time for day will be about 2 hours at a time.

I had to retank my skid steer this way, it turned out that 1/2 gal of gas got me about 30 min of run time.... which for that machines job was more than enough. It will go a couple days before it needs its little tank filled. Saved space on the machine.

Not to mention, after 30 min it runs out f gas and thats just about the time that old thing needs to sit and cool down anyway.

Nebraska Tractor Test says 2.7 gal/hour at max load. Myself, doing lighter work (than 'max load'), I experience about 1/2 of their number, closer to 1 1/4 g/h

i run a finish mower with my 2N. i mow a bit over 3 acres with it. it takes me around two gallons to do it in about an hour in 2nd gear.

Perhaps I missed an earlier post, so forgive the question...

Why would you put anything other than a standard tank on your N? I mean the design has kinda been proven out over a few years, and number of machines... Plus, it's gotta be easier just bolting on a new one rather than designing something new. Space isn't an issue where it sits...

No fault finding here... I've overthought enough projects in the past, and made my life far more complex a s a result... Trying to avoid that more in my life these days...

It doesn't have to be a real big tank.
It sounds like you aren't going to be
running it for hours and hours at a time.
I plowed snow with this 1 gallon tank all
one winter. Just had to make sure it was
topped off with fuel every time.
Maybe a 5 gallon tank for an outboard motor
would serve your purposes.

As per the other thread I started... it has a jungle jim loader on it, and removing the hood is a major pain, and getting into the engine thru the loaders frame is another major pain. If I put a smaller tank on it and a different hood that is easy to lift off and on it'll be simpler and easier in the long run. If not for the loader... I would leave it alone.

Just streamlining my life to make it easy. I will fab a nice hood to keep the weather off the engine.

I need ease of function not originality. Not having the hood and tank in the way will make repair and maintenance quicker and easier....with that loader on it. Also this tractor is a big unknow, I have no idea what shape its innards are in or what will go wrong soon after I get it overhauled.

The thought of me having to troubleshoot it in the cold drizzle of winter only to have to remove the hood tank fuel lines ect ect... brrrrr. No way.

So back to the tank size... thanks for the input guys.. that helped a lot. At @ a gallon an hour, for my use I think a 2 or 2.5 gal tank will be fine, only needing a refill maybe once a week.

One upside is it will always have fresh gas in it. Also like I told my brother when he saw I put a tiny 1/2 gal tank on the skid steer and asked why I did that....I replied "smaller tank smaller explosion". LOL
