8N Won't Stay Running

My 8N will start but won't stay running. It acts like its being starved for fuel. If I disconnect the fuel line at the carb, gas runs free out of it.
I can screw on that elbow with the filter from the carb and gas runs free there too. But just to be sure I cleaned both that filter and the one at the
sediment bowl. When it starts to miss if I choke it I can get it to run a bit longer. Put a new carb on and it didn't help.

Cleaned out and checked the air filter. It did seem to run a bit longer when not hooked to the air filter and just taking air at the carb but it did
die then as well.

I tried to make sure timing is correct but the thing won't run long enough to give me a chance to check it. I did go through the procedure in the IT
Manual that says to set the points to just start to open at 4 degrees BTDC. It did start and run fairly well, albeit rough and then sounded like not
getting fuel and died. I am keeping in mind that someone said 90% of fuel problems are electrical.

Thoughts?

Will it fill a pint jar in 2 to 3 minutes out of the drain in the carb bowl?

To properly check fuel flow you really need to remove the plug at the bottom of the carb bowl. It should fill a pint jar in less than two minutes. Try this and report back results.

Forgot to mention. Your tractor may be running too lean to stay running. There is a fuel mixture screw that if turned out will provide more fuel. Start about 1/4 turn at a time. Stick with your old carb as most new ones are junk. Much better off rebuilding your old one or having someone from this forum do it for you.

From what you said about setting the static timing, I'm assuming you have an angle mount distributor. If so, as soon is it quits running, pull the coil wire from the center of the distributor cap and hold it a good 1/4 inch away from the block and with the key on hit the starter button, and check for a good strong spark. It might be easier if you have a helper. Don't forget to turn the key back off. Let us know what you found.

Yes side dist. Its a '52 I
believe. I can fill a pint jar
from carb bowl in about 1:30.
Will check for coil spark
next.
