Front mount distributor or side mount?? If front the point gap is correct. If side mount point gap is wrong. Does choking it hurt or help?? If it helps it is running lean

HiYa Homer-
What's wrong with the archives on your PC? Operator error? Select a topic and go but there is no way YT manages them in chronological order so you have to seek out, pick and choose the threads you want to open. More info required on your system. Yeah, we need to know if 6V or 12V system? Front Mount Distributor or Angle (Side) Mount? Stop tossing new parts at it willy-nilly. A tuneup is fine, and a carb rebuild is fine, but if tractor wasn't running b4, you really don't have any idea what the true root cause problem is/was. How did it run b4 you messed with anything? FACT: 99.98% of all non-starting issues are due to incorrect wiring regardless if using a 6V or 12V system. An electrical short can cause back-firing/popping. Popping can be from firing order wrong. On the 8N, firing order is 1,2,4,3 CCW though the early 8N Owner/Operator Manuals are wrong and have them shown as CW for the front mount. If using the front mount, was dist rebuilt, timed, and tested correctly per manual? If you have the front unit and mounted it 180 DEG off, it got destroyed at power up. The base is junk and you need a new base. Keep the guts, reuse. If using a side mount dist, was unit rebuilt, timed, and tested using manual and timing light per manuals? I don't know what you mean by this: ...carb. not helping good gas flow from bottom of carb... FUEL FLOW TEST should be done first with engine always COLD. More to it than just the carb drain plug. Pass? Move on to electrical. Fail? Determine true root cause why, rebuild carb if needed, and resolve, then move on. Rebuilding the carb with settings at OEM Specs. If problem is electrical, and it still won't start, time to get into the entire wiring system. Do you have your ESSENTIAL MANUALS and related documents? You really need them as your guide to troubleshooting and understanding how to use and maintain all the systems on your machine. ELECTRICAL/WIRING: Do you know how the OEM 6V/POS GRN system works? how the front mount works and set correctly? Do you know how a 12V switch out setup is properly done? It matters too if front or side mount as they are both different setups. Start with the battery. Disconnect it and any lights you have wired up. Incorrect wiring with lights is a #1 issue for shorts as many are done wrong, especially when switching over to 12V. Much to answer and digest before you begin.

6 volt front mount no lights I have changed all wiring one at a time It starts and runs ok just has exhaust popping I just bought about month ago and the gas tank was full of rust so I have been waiting on it to be cleaned and inside coated I order new tank but has never came seller says was delivered NOT !!

My 51 8N side mount had a popping/ticking noise, usually when under load.

I found problem to be an eaten out corner of manifold gasket, bottom rear corner at #4 cylinder.

New manifold gasket cured the problem

homer Long..What was the out come of MF 35 gas deluxe clutch ?

Seemed that the clutch was a challenge...it would be interesting to know the out come...????

Thanks

Bob..

I always verify mechanical operation before fuel and electrical. Compression test would be the first place to start followed by valve adjustment.
