rear rim bolts

The replacement rim that I bought for my 8n has sort of round loops for the mounting and the other rim that was on the tractor has square loops that uses the original type bolts. What should I use on the replacement rims with the round loops? The square on the original type bolts is too big to fit in the loop. Do I have to use 1/2 carriage bolts?

Sounds like you have a Ferguson style rim.
You won't get it to match the original
style carriage polts. Regular hex head
bolts will work fine if looks don't matter.

My replacement rim used 5/8 x 3 carriage bolts. I couldn't find any locally. Had to
order them. Of course they were only sold in sets of five!

FORD original Hat Rims used special 5/8-18 x 2.82 Carriage Bolts, p/n 350719S8. Available repro from Dennis Carpenter, $2.95 ea. Also from DC is the OEM style 5/8-18 Hex Nuts, with 1-1/16 AF (Across Flats), p/n 33806-S7, $1.50 each, and the OEM 5/8 Flat Washer. FINE THREAD CARRIAGE BOLTS are no longer made as industry standard. The industry only makes coarse thread carriage bolts today. You can use 5/8-11 x 3 Carriage Bolts on the Hat Rims or the newer, aftermarket 6-LOOP style made and sold today. You can get 5/8-11 x 3 Carriage Bolts at McMaster-Carr - SEE LINK - Grade 2, pack of 10 for $12.50. Grade 5 runs almost $8 a piece. Helpful Hint: Apply a dab of Anti-Seize on fasteners.

Rounding off the square shoulder would work for getting them on.
But should they ever need to come off he could have a heck of a time getting them loose again.

used the 5/8 carriage bolts and ground off 3 of the corners and left one to keep it from spinning. Seems to work and with grade 2 bolts it is inexpensive. Grade 2 bolts I think are strong enough for shows and tractor rides, maybe not for heavy work.
