I posted this question earlier and I thank you for your reply's. But I still don't know if a 12 volt starter will work with a 6 volt battery on a Ford 8N. The starters may have
been mixed up at the repair shop.

If you have the same starter that went into the shop as 6v, it's still 6v because it requires removing the field coils to make it 12v. That's an involved and expensive process not part of a rebuild job.

Yes, a 12v starter will work on 6v but it will spin very slowly and may end up w/ the bendix jammed in the ring gear.

As I understand your problem, the starter does not spin at all, correct? What is the exact voltage at the battery? What is the exact voltage at the solenoid? With the starter button depressed, what is the exact voltage at the starter stud?

Post back with those voltage readings.

I converted my 52 8N over to twelve volt. I replaced the selonoid on the starter, since the old one was shot, and the tractor has absolutly no trouble starting. the selonoid even says 6v on it, but from what I understand the starter really does not care. good luck!
