I just had my 8N starter completely rebuilt and I have the same
problem. Whatever I do to get it to kick in there is no response. Could
I possibly have a 12 volt starter? Will a 12 volt starter work with a 6
volt battery?

Do you have a voltmeter? What is the voltage of the battery? What is the voltage of the battery when you attempt to start? If you get a good voltage reading proceed down the line to the starter and check voltage at the solenoid. If the tractor hasn't been modified the starter switch grounds the solenoid to activate it. Be careful if you attempt to jump the solenoid to ground and be sure the tractor is in neutral.

HiYa Basil-
Depends on who rebuilt it and if it was done correctly, but, know too that 99.98% of all non-starting issues are due to mucked up wiring regardless if 6V or 12V. No, 6V or 12V - the starter motor doesn't care which; it will start on either or. ALL 8N's used a 3-Wire Starter Motor With a Solenoid. Do you have the correct Solenoid? P/N 8N-11450. Get your ESSENTIAL MANUALS and related documents, go thru entire wiring system, verify correct, and get battery tested under load. Front Mount or Side Mount distributor? When you press the Neutral Safety Pushbutton Switch, does the starter just click click click on the Solenoid? Yes? It is a dead battery. Get tested at a shop, verify wiring system is correct, then proceed to connect a good brand battery, power up, and test. Simply connecting a standard battery trickle charger won't do anything if the battery is dead.
