9N starter switch failing?

Good morning: My 9N's starter switch has been working fine for years. Yesterday, it did not work when I first tried to start engine. I wiggled the gear shift lever, to make sure the interlock feature was not blocking the starter button/pushrod system. After pressing the button several times, the switch worked, engine started. I am thinking I need to check whether the switch is loose where it mounts (below the battery, if I recall correctly). What problems has anyone had with a working starter switch failing? Any personal experiences with this would be helpful.

Yes, that's a good start, and yes, that is where it's mounted.

Usually burnt contacts inside the switch (normal, over time) require the momentary part of the switch to be pressed further in.

It is somewhat of a fine line, push in enough to make contact, but not so much that the switch is always making contact

Is your start pushbutton switch on the dash or on the shifter cover? There were three pushbutton switches used. It could be a worn contact - tales of fellas adding
pennies seems to revive old images. I'd start with the battery first, pull it, take to a local shop and get it tested. Don't assume you can just test it on your VOM, that
can only tell you VDC. The battery must meet specific gravity and can be tested with a hydrometer, $6 on your local auto parts store counter, but the test machine will be
better and more accurate. If battery tests bad, opot for a good brand new one, GRP1 = 6V or GRP 35 = 12V. If unit tests good and switch issue continues, next step is to
get into the switch itself. Lotsa archived info on that topic...BUT, don't go buying any new parts just yet until you perform a true root cause problem solving method.

Good evening, Tim and others: I used the tractor to mow the front and back yards today. I had to press the starter button several times, but not really hard to make it work. Mine has the button on top of transmission cover, a pushrod pushes against the switch, which is sort of below the battery. Too lazy to investigate further today...

et a new switch....the copper wears away by the high current and arc. Replaced one last year. Take old one apart & look for yourself.
