8N Carb Issues

Greetings All,

My 8N tractor is not running worth a darn.

Ive just replaced the plugs, wires, coil, points and condenser because it was in need. The fuel bowl assembly was recently replaced as well. But I believe that Im having a fuel related issue. The tractor will start but acts like its starving for fuel. The only way I can keep it running after it starts is if I keep the choke pulled out. Ive only had the tractor a year so Im going through and replacing a lot of the older parts. Im not throwing parts at it but, the parts I have replaced have been on the tractor a long time and were in need because of age and condition.

Much appreciation on any suggestions.

Making sure you know how to adjust the main jet on the carburetor? Symptom you describe suggest you need to back out main jet about 1/2 turn or as needed to fix problem. If this is not the issue then turn off the fuel, remove plug at bottom of carb and then turn on the fuel. Should have a steady stream that fills up a certain size container in 2 minutes. Someone will chime in with the size. Do this and report back to us.

Failed to mention that there is a screen filter on the carb inlet that can get clogged. Pictures show inlet on carb, main jet and the inlet removed.

It is the original intake and air filter and this is the first time its been pulled off since Ive owned it.

The intake oil reservoir was nasty and caked up, but at least there was oil in it. The air filter intake tube was really nasty. The intake screen element was not too
bad. I cleaned everything previously mentioned to like new condition.

So, I have this knocked out and it should be good.

Ill keep knocking these recommendations out until I get this solved. I appreciate everything and will report back.

Rookie mistake #1 - start buying all new parts and replacing willy-nilly without first troubleshooting with true root cause problem solving methods. FACT: 99.98% of all non-starting issues are due to incorrect wiring. Often fuel is to blame. Did you perform the Fuel Flow Test first? Do you have an early front mount 8N model or a later side mount model, and, are you using the 6V/POS GRN setup or a 12V/NEG GRN switcheroo job? Just because you have a 6V battery, or a 12V battery for that matter, don't assume that you are wired correctly for that system. Do you have the ESSENTIAL MANUALS and related document? See? There is a lot more to owning and operating a FORD TRACTOR. I rebuild carbs, generators, starters, and distributors in my sleep. Send me your Marvel-Schebler TSX 33 or TSX 241 carb and will rebuild it. Guaranteed to start and run on first try and may or may not tweaking. Sworn satisfied customer testimonials on file. Email is open.
