Starter thrust washer

On the 9n starter the diagram shows both a thrust washer at the commutator and the base housing.

Dose anyone know what materal these are supposed to be? Leather, fiber, Bronze, steel?

At some point in my starters life someones gone in did a poor rebuild job and never replaced them

woodman1928 ,All of the washers between the commutator and end cap are fiber spacer washers that I have seen.

Do you know how thick they are supposed to be and do you
know if its ok if i use a leather washer instead that way it will
were compress slightly like on the old stuerbakers?

Woodman, Measure how much end play that you have in the armature shaft ,total end play ,then subtract .010 - .015 the remainder is how thick your shim washer should be.Or just close not thicker fiber washer, leather would work in a pinch.
