I have been looking at paints and had wanted to use something compatible with ppg70075 vermillion red. That I can find. My issue is primer. I need something that I could lay on, but sometimes I cant paint for maybe up to a month. I also hate sanding, but will do on sheet metal. Is there a primer that I can shoot on the tranny/engine and not have to sand before I apply the paint? Or would I be better to use a single stage paint? If a single stage, what would be compatible with the 70075?

Dennis,
Might have better luck in the Paint & Retoration forum.

I use Single Stage on all my tractors. Been using PPG Omni MTK Acrylic Urethane Mix. I use this over PPG Omni Epoxy Primer. This, for me, is a great combination for most tractors. The 70075 is available in Omni SS.

You obviously are looking to do a good job, using quality automotive paint. I think you will find no matter what brand of paint, most primers want to be top coated within x number of hours, or require scuffing and another coat of primer before color.

Scuffing up a tractor is not that big of a deal. Especially if doing it in several applications. I can scuff all expoxy on a small tractor like these Fords in less than a couple of hours. Again, not that big of a deal.

I don't know of any primers that the recommendation is to top coat days, weeks, or months later, without scuffing and reapplying a coat of primer.

Here's a pic of 70075 & 31657 on an 8N. Note that this grey, is a little greenish. Loved the way it came out.

On cast I have luck with this. Wipe clean and re apply light coat Zip 834 then top coat. Zip 834 is sold under several labels BASF, RM and I think Limo. Very old technology.

I believe that is a Zinc Phosphate product. I Zinc when sandblasting to bare metal. Usually apply with a spray bottle, and wipe down.

For me, I always cover the Zinc with a recommended primer before top coating with color, usually same day as spaying color.
