8N starter solenoid

Hello. I'm new here and need some help with a 1948 8N I just bought. First, I think it's a 1948. I can't read the serial number but based on various information I've read, it's a 1948.

My question is with the starter solenoid. Did 8N's ever come with a starter solenoid like the one in the picture? I don't think it's correct. I'm correcting some jury rigged wiring & I don't think the solenoid is going to work once the wiring is fixed. I did a Google search & I can't find any solenoids like that on an 8N.

Thanks for any help,
Dave

I have been told that here is a rule on this site that only allows photos to be uploaded after a certain numbers of posts by a newbie. Someone smarter than me will have to tell you that number is.

They sell the correct one on this site, it should mount on the starter, I've seen some on an 8N mounted elsewhere but they were probably something that the farmer had laying around or took off a junk vehicle,
either one will work. Did you test the solenoid to see if it's working like it's supposed to? Put a ground wire on the base and touch one of the small terminals with a hot wire from the battery (jumper wire)
and listen for a click. That should mean it's working, if you have enough hands you can verify that with a meter also by going across the two large terminals.Hope that makes sense to you.

NOPE! Not for 8N... Test with hot on correct large terminal ((other large terminal won't do anything) and ground on the small terminal.

Mike, the tractor is (mostly) original 6 V. positive ground. Studying wiring diagrams, it appears the original solenoid got it's (-) source internally from the battery terminal and it's (+) source from the starter button. Is this correct?

The solenoid on the tractor works but I don't think it's the correct solenoid. It gets its (+) source thru the mounting bracket (which is wrong for an original setup) & its (-) source from a couple of jury rigged wires & a push button switch that was mounted to the dash.

As best as I can tell, if I get rid of the jury rigged wires & switch, put the wiring back to stock, this solenoid is not going to work. Which is why I was trying to post a picture, so somebody could tell me "that ain't the right solenoid". The solenoid itself does work so I don't want to buy a new one if not needed.

JMOR, you posted quicker than me. Thanks. That's what I needed to know. Gonna head into town to see if I can get the right solenoid.

solenoid like yours can be made to work properly with the neutral safety switch, as shown in picture using a piece of plexiglass to insulate the mount. Insulator is held to starter by unseen counter-sunk screw.

New correct solenoid installed and wiring repaired & returned to stock. Cranking as it should. Thanks for the help. Now onto the next repair.

If anybody is curious, this is the solenoid that was on the tractor. The jury rigged wires have been removed in the picture but the cut off factory wire is shown.
