'49 8N - New Ring Gear - Now Clutch won't disengage

I split my first tractor with the goal of removing the flywheel to take it to a machine shop to have them replace the ring gear. The split was pretty easy, and extracting the flywheel was a piece of cake. Someone had been there before and done a proper clutch job not too long ago, so I decided against redoing that job. Took the flywheel to the machine shop and had the new ring gear installed. No resurfacing was done as it really wasn't called for. I got everything back together, aligned the clutch with the alignment tool and whatnot (this un-splitting was much more difficult that the initial split), and she started right up. However, when pressing the clutch pedal, it does not disengage (despite it having the same feel). It looks like I am going to have to split the tractor again, but I was hopeful someone here could impart some wisdom on what I am looking for, or maybe even can help me avoid splitting it again...

Sounds like you put the clutch disk in backwards and if you did it will do just as it is doing. BTDT and learned at a young age about that problem

Short side to the pressure plate long side to the flywheel if I remember right. Been a while since I did a clutch but I am always careful to make sure I put it in the way it came out

When the lined plate is installed wrong/''flipped'' the bolts that retain the flywheel to the crankshaft can catch on parts of the lined clutch disc hub.

In addition to the great advice ''old'' gave you, if the the tractor at all resisted going back together and you got rough with it, not to mention drawing it together with the bolts using any more than your fingers to snug them up the lined disc MAY have gotten deformed so it doesn't release with the normal travel of the pressure plate.

Getting it sinched up was a pain. Fortunately, I had purchased a whole clutch kit and have a new plate on hand should I find it deformed.

Sounds like it is a split the tractor again endeavor to inspect clutch plate orientation (which we don't have a consensus on yet) and potential clutch plate deformation. Oh joy :-\

bmoran4 ,Just remember that the spring side of the clutch plate faces the pressure plate.Old was A backwards.

New pressure plate and clutch disc installed. Now the clutch pedal has no "feel"/resistance to it. Clutch will not disengage. Really frustrated with how something seemingly as simple as a ring gear replacement has gone awry...

Is it worth it to visit the clutch adjustment? Or what do I do to get this going again?
