SUDDENLY ZERO OIL PRESSURE

So Lucy is my 47 2N, she is not the strongest gal. I did my yearly power wash to get the dirt and tree gunk off her. As with every year afterwards she refused to run on all cylinders. I cleaned the plugs and
got her going but within 20 min she was skiping again so I parked her for a week and ordered new plugs. The plugs in her were 8 years old with lots of cleanings on them. The new plugs showed up and I gaped
them and put them in and with the push of the starter she refued to fire. I did the usual pulling of the distributor and cleaned and filed the points, checked the gap and put it back. I hit the starter and she
fird up rather nicley. But she sounded odd, I ran her 5 min before I noticed there was zero oil pressure. I killer her, checked the oil and she is full. So I cracked the oil filter open and recranked her, no
oil flow. What could have happened? She had 35 to 40 PSI before on a cool day and in the 20's on a really hot day. Any ideas? I know the oil pump is gear driven and not connected to the front mount
distrubutor. Help a girl out.

Remove a line at the brass junction on the bell housing....or from the gauge....
and spin the engine over with the starter. If oil comes out, you have a Guage problem. If not, post back for step 2.

It's not the gauge, I checked the lines at the junction and at the filter, the filter should over flow with the cap off if there is any pumping action. It ran and there was no oil comming out with a 1/4 gap at the cap and non at the junction which IN losened after. I could hear that the engine was not right. I am absolutly sure there is no oil pressure. Something has suddenly happened to the pump or the pick up tube, I just don't know what would fail so suddenly. I have a feeling I am going to have to pull the front end, hood, radiator, front axel and oil pan to see what happened.

Oil pick up tube may have fell off the pump. I'd drain the oil and have a look see in the pa with the drain plug out

I may know whats wrong...Do the pick up tubes break often??? I changed the oil a couple of years ago and I think there was a cup just above the drain plug insude the oil pan, last year all I felt was just a pipe sticking down. I am looking at a video and they are showing the cup and pipe to the pump. Is it possiable for that to have come off inside the engine and not have gotten in the way of something? The video shows ithe pipe being brazed to fix it? I guess I drain the oil and stick my hand in and feel to see if it's there.

As others have stated, the oil pickup tube may heve come loose at some time. My 41 9n did just that a few years ago,but I just filled it through the pressure relief to get it going. It would keep oil pressure for a few days if I started it daily, but it's a pain to prime the pump like that.I got a new tube from this site as well as an oil pump rebuild kit[your results may vary, since I had bought it several years ago]. I pulled the engine, the pan and had an old tractor shop locally do the work fitting the innards of the pump. While the engine was out and on an engine stand,I had the opportunity to check the main and rod bearings and do a good cleaning of the engine. I was procrastinating for no reason,as it wasn't a bad job for a crippled up 70 year old,by myself.

So I need a clutch too, and my nunber two cylinder seems weak, its the one that fowls the plug most often and I think it is the smoker of the bunch. It seems like I may have to take her all apart. She is also impossiable to start in cold weather, cold being 40 or below. I got a new manifold last year for her thinking she might have a vavume leak since the exhaust leaks at the block. I have yet to install that. I wonder if its worth all the money? All I use her for is to do light yard work. move rocks, dirt and multch.

Lucy used to belong to the State of North Carolina so I am told, she had a belly sickle, or mower, the mounts are still on her. I guess I will take those off if I tear her down. If anyone needs them, maybe we trade for a good hood or tighter steering gear.

It isn't a very hard job if you have a place to hoist the engine [minus all of the removable parts] up and get it attached to a stand. Then you can turn it on it's side, upside down or whatever. I bought a chain hoist from ebay and a stand from Harbor Freight,so they were cheap, but worked well. The clutch can be bought here as a kit[clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing] and is reasonable. The clutch works well on mine, and I had a chance to check all of the bearings and replace gaskets and seals. There are lots of knowledgeble folks here to help.
