8N idle speed

Hi fellas, hope somebody out there can help me with my 1952 8N.
She starts and runs like a champ ... BUT ... she runs like a race horse 50 yards away from the finish line. I can't seem to slow her down to a nice calm idle.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I think I might have just figured it out with the adjustment screw on the backside of the carburator.

I'm thinking she idles best at 7000 rms?

Both of mine will idle down to about 400.

Both of mine will idle down to about 400.

Outside of "bragging rights" a nice, smooth idle at six or seven hundred is a lot more useful/practical for a working tractor than the "textbook" 450 RPM's, IMHO.

Not much torque available for takeoff at 400 R.PM'S, LOL!

Thank you, that is good to hear.

Both of my restored 8N's are working tractors. In fact I'm heading out to plant about a 20 acre hay field today. It seems that 700 rpms is as low as I can get her and still keep a smooth idle.

Is the only idle adjustment on the backside of the carburetor?

Thanks for taking the time to through out a few ideas fellas ... it is appreciated.

I said they will, does not mean that i run them there.
can't do any work at an idle!
