can I get away with this?

So, I am about to put new hydraulic/tranny fluid in my 8N. I pulled out all three plugs and let the oil drain for a while. the fluid is clean, but some of it was a little lumpy and it seems that their might still be a bit of sludge in there. I know a lot of folks recomend running a few gallons of diesel fuel through it, but I do not want to spend money (and time) I do not have too. I already have the fluid, and would not be against replacing it a few months down the line (like oct or nov). If that it not an option, that is fine, but I was just courious what you all thought about it. Thanks!

So, it's better to leave the crud in place than take an hour or two, plus $15 in diesel to clean it out, only to have to change out the fluid in the fall at $50+ for a 5 gal pail? (don't recall how much juice the N takes)

Yea, you likely won't hurt it as is, but you're so close to the goal, why stop now?

(and, yes, I understand, when you need the machine running, a couple hours matters... I don't know your situation...)

f never cleaned out in 70 years, the crap in there is NOT going to wash out. Thick like cow poop when eating dry hay, not spring greens. A few hands full here:

Some disassembly required to dig that out.

okay, so I went ahead and pulled the right ispection cover on the hyd pump and I am running ATF and Carb cleaner through it. getting a decent amount of gunk out, but not all. I think this should do the trick. the tranny is already clean, and although I think their may be a little sludge in the differantianel/axle, the fluid looked brand new! Thanks for the quick replies.

Good choice. Anything you can get out is good. The rest will probably just sit where it's been for another 70 years...

You could put some of the old fluid back in, and some diesel, run it around a bit and lift and lower the 3pt. That will stir up the crud and then drain it again with fresh.

My N gear oil looked like brown milkshake when I got it. Did the above and it's still clean/clear years later.

When I had the top cover off the transmission of my 48 8n I used a hand weed sprayer and mineral spirits to flush it out. Couldn't flush the differential very well but running it and futere fluid changes will help clean the rest.
