Hi,
I have a 9n converted to 12 volt. Need new cables, the ones I see for sale are 2 gauge, is this what I need.
Thanks

ffinmich,Yes the 2gauge cable will be fine for a 12 volt setup. The original 6 volt used 0 or 00 cables.

If it were mine, I'd make the ground cable long enough to reach down to the mainframe of the tractor near the starter, not a short one to sheet metal around the dash/battery holder assembly.

12V battery cables should be the smaller diameter ones like used on your car or truck so 2 GA is fine. 6V needs heavier gauge. Get a GRP25 or GRP35 12V battery but avoid teh bargain-house brands; most have poor lifespans. Spend the extra bucks fora good brand like Interstate, DEKA, DURACELL, or EXIDE. Have it tested for specific gravity at a trusty shop on their machine. It must sustain a full charge under load. Invest in a float charger, not a trickle charger, to keep battery at a full charge when not in use. The DELTRAN Battery Tender is a superior unit. The 6V version is the Battery Tender Jr. Wally-World sells them for about $30. Be sure to use the correct fan belt with your ALT and a belt tensioner device regardless if you use a GEN or an ALT. Without it you will never charge the battery.

The most important part of doing a 12V switch over job is the wiring. Simply swapping out your 6V battery for a 12V battery won't do -there is more to it than that to do it right. Going to 12V usually means exchanging the GEN to and ALT as well. On the 9N & 2N you also remove the roundcan cutout too - early 9N's and all units with the 8N and after used a Voltage Regulator as well, but the VR gets pulled out too. A lot of guys try to wire their systems without knowing proper procedures and end up with non-starting issues. The ALT can be the 1-Wire style or the 3-Wire Style but wiring is slightly different on each. If you use your OEM 6V Coil on a 12V switch over, you will need to add an extra external 1-OHM Ceramic resistor in the coil circuit -see picture. You can delete the extra resistor if you swap out your 6V coil to a 12V coil on your front mount. You must use the OEM Ballast Resistor regardless if you are using 6V or 12V. Get the manuals if you don't have them so you know. If you don't already have this, here's a 9N/2N wired for 12V. Do It Right The First Time.

I have not been pleased with the quality of battery cables from either our YT host or other sources. I have found that the 20 1ga NAPA cable p/n 711931 is of excellent quality and suitable for 6v and 12v gas or diesel applications. The last one I purchased was US made.
