Radiator drain petcock

I need to replace the drain petcocks on the 8n radiator and block. What is the consensus nowadays to apply to the threads? Teflon tape? Indian Head Shellac? Other?

It is a very low pressure system so most
anything will work. I generally like to use
pipe dope around tractors as teflon tape is
more likely to get into somewhere it
shouldn't.

You don't need any puckey stuff on a petcock. The original didn't use anything. Don't use Teflon tape on anything on a tractor. Several years ago I found a product called GASOILA-E for a superior sealant like on the Sediment Bulb into fuel tank. It should work on a petcock if you insist on using anything otherwise leave it as is. Petcock uses an NPT thread. If you have leaks, something else is wrong like somebody tried chasing radiator with wrong thread/tap size.

Agree, little to no pressure and coolant will eventually create a seal on its own.

Though, NPT does indeed require sealant of some sort to be leak free. These threads are not leak free under pressure.

NPTF will be leak free, but I still use pipe dope, more as a lubricant than a sealer

I ended up using Indian Head Shellac. Let it set and cure overnight, and put in the Prestone yesterday afternoon. All seems good. (FYI, the previous owner used teflon tape.)
