How to time a 901

I don't know if this is the correct forum for these questions. I have a Ford Industrial motor with engine number C0NN 6015J, which I think may be equivalent to a 901 or 9n. My questions are, can the timing be set statically or should it be set by timing light, and are the timing specs for the 901 appropriate for this engine. The engine is not in a tractor but in an old '60 or '61 log skidder.

I appreciate your time with this question.

It is overhead valve. I looked up pictures of the 901 tractor, and my motor looks the same, with the manifold and starter on the left if in the sear facing forward.

Your engine can be timed either statically or with a timing light if you can get it to idle at 450 RPM or less.

I find static timing easier and more reliable (if properly done) as most of these old engines will not idle slow enough for proper timing with a timing light due to worn throttle shaft bores.

Search web for Ford Models E and D
Industrial Engines.pdf . This manual has
instructions for static and timing light
timing for 134 and 172 industrial engines.
Should be close enough for the 192.

Thank you all for the help! This is just the information I was looking for.

The 900 is a Tricycle Tractor but the 172 Red Tiger Engine is still the same. Get the Essential Manuals and learn how to do things properly.

Thank you. Mr. Wickwiser suggested a searc and I was able to download manuals that cover the engine and topic I needed.
