Generator/Belt Tension

I have an 8N 6V. The generator is mounted with a bolt through two brackets on the generator. No matter how I tighten things, over time the generator moves making the fan belt a bit loose. I recall seeing a picture of an additional bracket of some sort on the list...but have not been able to find it.

Long and short... how do I keep the belt tensioned?

Thanks!

Rich

Hi Pete-
Yes there is only one bolt. Attached is a picture. Where can I get the additional bracket you mentioned?

Thanks!

The picture shows that you're missing the adjustor bolt and spring. You should be able to find them on ebay.

Hi Louis-

Thanks for posting the picture! Any idea where I can find one of those brackets?

Thanks!
Rich

Hi Rich, you may not find that actual part listed on ebay. You may have to pick out a seller that does list parts for an 8N and contact that person to see if he/she has one.
You could also try tractor salvage yards.

Are you sure you don't have the correct bracket & arm? Can't tell by your pic. 8N front mount tractors should all mount the same. See below (disregard the 39-47 parts shown at the top)

My 48 when I got it had the remnants of an adjusting rod on the top that somebody had connected to an alternator....

Even if it's not correct for the tractor, if it turns out that you don't have the correct bracket on the bottom, it might be a decent option for you to go ahead and fit the tension rod shown shown in what looks to be a kit on the top right of the above picture

After many decades since manufacture and multiple owners, any combination of events may have occurred... you will need something to keep the belt tight enough. But another point should be mentioned, that is a worn front axle pivot bushing can let the front axle parts move enough to 'bump' into the generator and that will loosen the belt regardless. The generator is not a suitable axle pivot stop! :)

Thanks for the diagram!

I copied it...what I have are the two brackets attached to the generator with the one bolt that goes through them (red arrows.) What I don't have is part# 10145 (Blue arrow.) Looks like it bolts on to the bracket on the generator, and must also bolt somewhere to the block.

Not sure exactly where it would go...anyone have this part on their tractor? Looks like it would be easy to make if I knew the length and where it attaches.

Thanks!

Thanks for that!! Just ordered one:) I reckon I can figure it out...but anyone know where this attaches to the block?

Just another angle. I have a 46 2N that I picked up in '95. After a new head gasket I had inadvertently left the bracket on the head off that holds tensioner. Rather than loosen the head bolt again I opted to not use the tensioner. Lock washers on both ends of the generator bolt and it is still holding fast, never any slippage at all.

Good morning, Rich.Fl: On my screen, I can see the part that is shown by itself is also on the assembly drawing with a blue arrow pointing at it. Same part number is readable on both illustrations using my computer.

BTW, my 9N uses the type of adjuster that looks similar to the item referred to as a kit. The bracket is on a head bolt, if I recall correctly. Maybe some of this will be helpful.

I fought this problem for years even replaced the king pin thinking that was it. What fixed the issue for me was to widen the front axle by one bolt hole because the radius arm on uneven ground would come up and hit the generator. Looking at the picture you posted it looks like you might have the same issue. Also I found the that if I used a 5/8 x 45 fan belt instead of the 46 1/8 one that most sell it helps. I have not had the problem again since I made these changes.
