Starting 1951 8N

Apologies if this has been covered before, but figured Id just ask before searching through 5000 threads.

My 1951 had a lot of shoddy wiring when I acquired it, so I wanted to get stuff replaced. New solenoid, coil, wiring harness, starter button (which had been bypassed), plugs, plug wires, ignition, terminal block, etc. Used what I considered to be the closest 12v conversion wiring diagram to what I have. When I turned on the ignition key, the ammeter moved positive like I believe it is supposed to, but no turn over with the starter button. Since the tractor is not located at my house, my question is does the clutch have to be depressed on the 1951 to allow starting? I had the shifter in neutral, but it didnt dawn on me that the clutch might allow the starter connection. Thanks in advance.

the ammeter moved positive like I believe it is supposed to,

No, if the ammeter is wired correctly, it should move to the negative side. That's easy enough to fix, but no traction when the starter button is depressed says
you have other problems.

Google ' wiring diagrams JMOR and find the one for your tractor, And get your meter out and start following the volts.

The clutch does not need to be depressed but most folks do that to remove the load from the transmission/hydraulics.

Ok. I did use what I thought was the closest of those diagrams based on the wiring harness I purchased. I also didnt have a good reference from the previous wiring since it was so rigged up and far removed from original. So, I guess I have the wires reversed on the ammeter. When I am back out to where the tractor is, I will try to get some pictures of my current wiring setup and hopefully somebody can tell me where Im going wrong. I am completely illiterate when it comes to figuring out voltage and checking if power is where it is supposed to be.

This was my dads old tractor that went through two other owners before I had the opportunity to acquire it back, so want to get this figured out. Thanks for the help.

Make sure tractor is in neutral and jumper cable battery to post on starter. If it turns your bat is ok and starter and bat have a good ground.

From there look over wiring and have a multi-meter handy.
