8n Starter Solenoid Question

This may be a dumb question.

I purchased a new 12V Starter Solenoid thru this website for my 8N. Its 3 posts. There is no indicator on the solenoid that I can see as to which of the
copper posts the battery should attach to. I installed it the same way the old solenoid was, with the small post the starter button wire attached to facing
inward (toward the engine). The battery cable is attached then to the right hand post, closest to the battery, and a bracket to the starter is on the left side
post.

When I try to start the tractor, the started 'clicks' once but nothing else happens. Do I have the solenoid installed incorrectly? Should I turn it around?
Is the new solenoid just bad?

I am baffled as to what try next.

Thanks for any advice!

I believe you have the solenoid connected correctly since it clicks when you press the starter button. The click is from the solenoid contacts closing at which time battery voltage should appear at the left hand terminal. To verify, remove the bracket connecting the the left terminal to the starter motor. Connect a test light to the left hand terminal and ground. The light should light each time the solenoid clicks. If this is the case you will need to determine why the starter motor does not operate when voltage is applied to the left hand terminal.

You stated the solenoid is 12 volt, is your tractor 12 volt or 6 volt. The reason I ask is, 6 volts to a 12 volt solenoid may cause a click but may not make a good connection.

Hi Ken,

My 8N is converted to 12 volt. I just installed a new battery also, so I know the battery is not the issue.

Just because it's new, doesn't mean it's charged. Along with the other things I mentioned before, if you haven't already, check the battery to be certain you have 12.5 volts

I've had more then one new battery not be worth my time to install as in BAD even if new

Starter motors do not care if 6V or 12v so someone was yanking you. If you get out your ESSENTIAL MANUALS you can see the electrical diagrams and how things are wired correctly. A click on the solenoid usually is an indication the BATTERY is very weak or dead so get it tested first at a trusty local shop under load. While he's doing that verify wiring is ALL correct.

Thanks Tim,

These colorized schematics help a lot! I have the original manuals, but was having trouble following which wire went to what because they all show the wires going into that common tube and then coming out. The colorized schematic clearly shows origin to destination...end to end. That is a great help.

I will test the battery today to verify if that is good or not. It sounds like the solenoid itself is wired correctly.

Success!

I tested the battery....checked out at 12.7 volts, so that was good.

Started to go thru the wiring connectors...all were tight and clean.

Checked the nuts holding the wires on the solenoid and the battery...all were tight and clean.

Then, for some reason I looked at the nut that holds the L-bracket to the starter (not the solenoid end) and that nut was loose. Hmmm, I thought. Could this be the culprit? So, I snugged that down and gave it a try. Presto! My tractor fired right up!!!

So thanks everyone for your input and help! It is a systematic elimination of potential issues, but finally got to the correct solution!

Paul L., So nothing wrong with the old solenoid ? Saxe it for a spare. How did the nut on the starter post get loose?
Self inflicted is my guess. yes or no

Hi Den,

I had replaced the solenoid because the battery side post threads were stripped and i thought it would be good to replace. The battery definitely needed to
replaced and I replaced the solenoid at the same time. Yes, self-inflicted in the end....i had a few words to say to myself when i discovered that!
