Re: 8N engine rpm

Replaced with new gov. and new carb. I have the right pto speed at 6 notches from stop on the throttle, after that it over raps even with stop screw screwed clear in against stop. Can
not get full use of throttle to end of throttle plate. I looked at another 8N linkage and the gov. arm pulls way back on that one , also it extends the gov. spring. Mine does not. I have adjusted the throttle rod, makes no difference. Any other ideas from you N Ford guys? Thanks.

Agree with Den on the china junk.

You say
.....arm pulls way back on that one , also it extends the gov. spring. Mine does not
The governor spring needs to be adjusted so that there is no tension and no slop at lowest idle position. This is done with the engine off. On these old Fords that is done by bending the curved part of the spring. Not exactly precision, but it can be done. When adjusted that way, the spring will begin tightening up and then stretching as you increase throttle. This balances against the governor centrifugal weights, allowing smooth, increased rpm's as you throttle up.
Governors work by limiting the rpm's, not increasing the rpm's. Without a governor most engines would have run away high rpm's

When you say rebuild, do you mean get the rebuild kit that is available here and replace the parts from that kit? There is also an internal assembly available? Or a full governor is even cheaper here than a
rebuild kit? My 2N governor housing flange is currently warped and I cannot get it to seal completely. Do you think the repopped ones will ultimately do the same? What parts of the reman governors are junk?
Thanks for your input.

Don't have the old original. I think my problem is that the spring on the new one and one that I took off is so dam tight you can't even get a small screw drive blade between the coils. Both gov. are the same way{old one & new one}no different. They both act the same way. If I could get a new original I would sure buy it. I will check with the New Holland dealer in Atlantic tomarrow.

It appears that the spring on the gov. arms is to heavy to do any thing other than to stay in place. there is no way that I can see that these springs are bendable. I looked at another 8N and that spring is much lighter & at full throttle it stretches where the one on mine does nothing.

I tried 3 "new" governors last year. None of them worked. I fixed my issue by replacing the outer spring and bending it to keep proper tension. I also contacted the ebay seller about the hybrid governor for sale. He told me i didn't know what I was talking about and wouldn't sell to a dumb buyer. I then described the different parts that were assembled and he told me that was my "opinion ' of his governor. Good stuff

I have tried two new gov., came to conclusion that the sellers of these china made things do not know the difference between a good one and a poor one, they just want to sell. I now have a gov., spring ordered from my New Holland dealer. The governors that I have tried have springs that are much to strong for the governors to work right.
