3 Point Hitch Problem

I have a 52 Ford 8N. All of a sudden the hitch arms don't go up or down like they should. I assume this is a problem with the hydraulics.

Is there any kind of trouble shooting or checks I can do to find out what the problem is?

ducate yourself for starters. Learn how it works before you can begin to determine what/why it is not working. There are thousands of postings in the archives on your problem..once you know enough to post some specifics, there are many of us that will help.

I just recently (last week) had some work done on the tractor. They replaced the rear wheel bearings, bearing races, seals and hub. Could this have affected the 3 point hitch operation?
 
Yep, what JMOR sez --- get the ESSENTIAL MANUALS and read as well as the old archived threads if'N ya wanna be an N Owner. The FORD hydraulic system is one of the most neglected functions on them. As long as all is working fine, no worries, but they forget about standard PM. The first thing to do when having a lift issue is to perform the fast and easy leak down test. Hitch up a load like a back blade, plow, or mower to your 3-PT. Start the engine and raise the load all the way to its fullest UP position and leave it UP then shut down engine. Take note if the load stays up or drops down. A fully functional system will maintain a load in the UP Position for weeks, even months at a time without dropping. A worn/weak system will drop its load within minutes, days, or a few weeks. A severely worn/weak system will drop the load within minutes usually, and all the way within am hour or two. The next step is to remove the side inspection covers on the lower trans center housing, RG side has the hyd oil dipstick. Repeat the load raising, keep your hands and fingers out of the operating system, and right after you shut down the engine, take your Mini-Mag flashlight and crawl on your hands and knees to look way up inside the workings and look at the hydraulic cylinder that is fastened to the underside of the top cover where the seat goes to see if any oil is seeping out and around the piston. This is the test that tells you if your cylinder is worn and needs replacing. The original 9N/8N piston was a 3-steel ring device but the, later NAA design was much better and the piston now had a rubber O-RING and leather backup wiper/washer. The NAA-530-B Piston will work just fine on any 9N, 2N, or 8N as well. Plan on a new piston kit, a new cylinder (don't try and re-use old one, trust me) and the complete gasket kit. You will also need a new safety relief valve. BUT, know that you may still have issues with the pump. If base got cracked from using with water in the sump and it froze, you need a new base at least. If pump is cracked you will see bubbles in the sump when you start the inside test. If not cracked, pulling the pump and rebuilding could be in your next stage anyway, at least R&R'g the chambers. R&R'g the Ford Tractor hydraulic system is not a difficult task, just time consuming and best to have your buddy help. I wrote a document on the 8N HYD SYSTEM REPAIR so email me for the info.

Always start at the last place a person worked on. Did you check the fluid level and know what fluid they put in?
 
Problem solved. Thanks to everyone on this board.

In looking at the service manual, I noticed the lever that engages/unengages the hydraulic pump. It was in the unengage position. Switched it and BINGO.
