aftermarket seat on my 8n

I have some type of aftermarket seat on my 8n. It's one that has a shock absorber behind the seat and it's quite old. Somewhere maybe 10 years ago I found a topic on some site about rebuilding it,where to get bearings and the shack etc,now I can't find that. My question on it is,has anyone with this seat had any luck mounting it further back? I'd like a little more "leg room". I'd also like to know the name of the seat.As for it's age,it was on the tractor when my dad bought it about 55 years ago.Thanks.

Without a photo I must guess but suspect that it is a Knoedler as you mention that it provides little leg room.

Knoedler seats do restrict leg room and it is not possible to set them back much without raising the seat assembly because the structure will interfere with the draft control pivot.

Not sure what replacement parts are available for the Knoedler but suggest that you try Steiners as well as our hosts.

Yeah Knoedler it is. How can someone forget a name like that? Yes looking at it some years ago I couldn't figure out a way to move it back. This is a seperate question but I'll just ask it here. How about some type of extension for the power take off engagement lever (I guess that's what it's called. Sitting on the tractor and then leaning really sideways and reaching down kills my back.

Just emailed that guy, thanks. I never thought of doing it that way. I am a little worried as it looks like it's right in the way to get on and off the tractor,so I may have to do something about that,no big deal. I could probably rig something up myself, but usually when I go to do a project like that the hour or 2 job turns into 2 or 3 days of monkeying around. I'm thinking instead of bolting the lever in place just have the bolt there and slip the lever on when needed. That way I think the lever would be in a "down " position and not interfere with getting on and off the tractor. Have to get it and figure things out. I searched one day for an hour or 2 and never did find something like that.

Yep Knoedler AKA the short man seat. Have a link for spreadsheet for parts but can't post here. sad me an mail. Don't know how far you can move it back without interfering with spring or lift.
Because of my long legs always hated them and when I got them sent them down the road. Now I actually might be looking for one depending how close to the dash I can get it for my everett
project.

As far as parts do you mean things like the shock and bearings? I've rebuilt the seat a few years ago, after about a lifetime of "squeak, squeak, squeek" which drove me crazy.
That site with the pto lever also had a gas cap with a guage on it. That would be kind of handy,i learned years ago flicking your lighter to see how much gas you have isn't a good idea.

Go to the Oliver bard and ask for Phil Heisley's phone #. He has lots of parts for a Knoedler seat. I have
purchases bearings from him. I love my Knoedler on my 8N. I would like to find another one for a different
tractor.

The 'shock absorber' comment you made at first I thought you might have a Dearborn/Monroe E-Z Ride seat. It used a shock absorber but the 8N style was mounted in the
front and the 9N/2N version was mounted in the rear of seat. The FORD Rest-O-Ride seat came out in 54/55 and was the standard OEM part beginning with the 800 Model. ter
was also a Knoedler seat as well. Here is the EZ Ride and R-O-R for reference. I believe you can get the bushings and rubber springs for the R-O-R seat still. Try
STEINERS. There also was place to get the EZ Ride parts at but I don't have that info handy. The EZ Ride Seat was limited to about 150 pounds payload. Both seats
required you to remove the original pan seat and mount the new frame onto with.

Just wanted to let people know I got the PTO extension lever or whatever installed.Had a couple of very minor issues but I'm not going to nitpick on the thing. I think it's pretty nice. With pto disengaged the lever is down nested right up against the side of the transmission,so it doesn't interfere with getting on and off the tractor, and when engaged it sticks straight up right about where it is terribly in the way of getting on and off which is exactly what I wanted. I always shut the tractor off when I get off of it anyway, but I don't always disengage the pto because it hurts my back to reach the original lever. Now I'll be able to disengage the pto along with shutting the tractor off when I get off of it. That's how my dad taught me to run it along with always shut off the gas valve,so I don't even think about it now.
I also bought the gas cap with a gauge on it from that place, which I wish I would have done about 50 years ago. When I put it on it barely moved the needle from empty but I knew the gauge worked,so I looked in there and sure enough,it had very little fuel in it,I didn't realize it was that low. I don't know how much fuel it holds, but I put about 5 gallons in it and got it near full on the gauge,I didn't look to see what it looked like in the tank, biggest thing is empty for me. No more taking off the cap and flicking my lighter to see how much gas I have.
