Ignition resistor

Quick question (I've searched and not found) 9N w/ front mount 9N16020 has been upgraded to a 12 volt system (not by me). I recently upgraded to electronic ignition. Tractor is running. This upgrade was due to a poor running tractor that a new carb did not fix.

Is the resistor that the 12v wire that runs from the key to the coil required. I've read yes, no and maybe on different sources. Tractor has a new 12v coil (DB Electrical IFD0003).

Thanks
Curtis

The oem ballast resistor is always needed w/ the 9N front coil. ( see tip # 30)

The resistor is needed to reduce running current to the coil.

All you need is the oem ballast resistor and no other.

I would guess that you used Pertronics update and if I were you I would call them and ask that question, as a rule on there systems they want full voltage and also carbon conductor wires.

(quoted from post at 13:13:54 08/25/21) I would guess that you used Pertronics update and if I were you I would call them and ask that question, as a rule on there systems they want full voltage and also carbon conductor wires.

I would but Pertronics customer/technical support is less then impressive. They are shipping out incorrect parts in their kits. Then when you call and have them send you what is supposed to be correct, it's not. Ended up just ordering a second kit that retained the original style coil.

Regardless of what the pertronics stuff needs to run, the coil still needs the resistor....

Personally I'd toss the pertronics stuff in the garbage... years ago I used to run those kits on boats.... doesn't take many times of being stranded on a river to realize that chinese EI isn't an upgrade...

Can't answer any EI questions, don't muck with them, but suggest you consult where you got it. ...This upgrade was due to a poor running tractor that a new carb did not
fix.... Well, that should have been a HUGE clue for you that it wasn't fuel issue and most likely an electronic issue. Wat was wrong with teh odl carb? Did youperform
teh fuel flow test? Did you rebuild it? 99.98% of all non-starting tractors are due to incorrect wiring. The Ford Front Mount Distributor is a mystery to many fellas and
it doesn't have to be. The Manuals contain all the needed info yet many don't even own a copy. Front mount must be tuned, timed, tested, off the tractor then installed
only one correct way with the offset cam tangs but if it gets forced off 180 it will destroy the aluminum base and never work right again. When dist is set and mounted
correctly, you could have other wiring issues that prevent it from starting. many fellas encounter this problem, think that they then need to switch to 12V and end up
with the same problem. Hence you need the essential manuals. Whether 6V or 12V or EI if you do not have the system wired correctly, you will have non-starting issues.
