Old Marvel and Schebler carburetor

I recently purchased a 2N and the previous owner gave me a bucket of spare parts. It included an old Marvel and Schebler carburetor. I have know idea if it is the original carburetor or not.

Is it worth attempting to refurbish this or should I shelve it?

Period correct for a 2N. Also note that the main adjusting needle is the original style. You don't see much of that anymore. New style needle has a screwdriver slot, is longer and uses a different spring. The 1949 parts catalogue list both the old style needle and the new style needle. After that both the old style needle and spring disappear from the parts manuals.

The old style needle I have is all brass and cleaned up nicely, It does not work with the new style spring because it will bottom out on the spring before it gets to the adjustment range so all you have regulating the fuel flow is the main jet. I was able to find an old style spring and get that sorted.

If you should decide to rebuild it and install the new style needle you will need the new style spring as well. If you go that route I would suggest keeping the main needle, its spring, and the ratchet clip that clicks when you turn the needle and helps keep it in adjustment together as a set as some restorer after true originality is bound to want them.

FORD TRACTOR used the Marvel-Schebler carburetor til the Thousand Series Models. The Marvel-Schebler Model TSX-33 Carb was used from 39-49 on the N-Series Tractors. Then M/S released the TSX-241 Model that was a improved TSX-33 unit. The TSX-241 was used up thru all 8N Production til 1952. As with all OEM Ford parts, rebuilding is always your first choice as they were deigned to be rebuilt over and over. Add that the parts made today are cloned cheap Cheena made junk. The best rebuild kit to get is the TISCO C546V. As stated below, the OEM type of Main Jet is shown on yours and this also used the thumb-screw throttle adjustment. Both were revamped with the release of the TSX-241. The TISCO kit now contains the latter type Main and Throttle screws. The old style knurled thumb screws are no longer made. There is also a bargain-priced kit that does not include many of the other newer parts needed in the carb -get the complete one. Kits do not include new mounting studs and nuts; idle spring; brass fuel inlet elbow; and the four 12-24 x .812 Fillister Head screws that fastens the two halves together so try not to booger them up save when rebuilding. I rebuild these carbs and have some all ready to go. If you want to do an exchange or have me rebuild yours, email me. If you already got another unit I will buy your OEM TSX-33.

*NOTE: The 2N-9510 CARB, M/S TSX-38 was identical to the TSX-33 Model except it had a double throw choke lever and was only used on the Industrial and 2N Warhorse tractors.

NOTE Main Jet and Throttle Idle Screws. My theory is that FORD & M/S revamped the screws to utilize a screwdriver to adjust rather than reaching in with the hand to adjust and risk burning your hand. The TISCO complete carb kit C546V includes the newer type main and Throttle Idle screws.

Worth it and easy. Save OEM parts unless shot. A good dip in a carb cleaner solution over night, rinse blow out with air.

Hello Tim, I have the original Marvel and Schebler carburetor off of my 46 2N and I am considering a rebuild on it. So I started here by doing a bit of reading and research. That brought me to your reply. I am not finding the complete Tisco kit listed when I search it online. Tractor Supply sells the Tisco basic kits but not a complete one. Yesterdays Tractor offers a complete kit but I am not sure of the brand. Have you used the ones they offer or could you share a link for the kit you recommend? Thanks. Adam.
