8N Water Pump Question

I have a small amount of play at the outside edges of the fan blades. Is this normal or is it time to change the pump?

If are sure it's the pump and not the fan, yes, change out the pump. Or it will launch that fan into the radiator when the bearing goes.

Remove fan belt. Grab the blade and see if it wobbles back and forth. Yes? It is the bearing and impellor -shot. Remove old water pump and remove the pulley on it. Get a new water pump, install the old pulley onto it, and replace pump on engine with new gaskets. At this point you may want to evaluate your fan belt and replace it if needed as well. They used to supply a pump repair kit but I haven't seen one of those in years. $65 gets you a new foreign-made pump.

Note that a new pump may require slightly longer studs in the block. Studs should be available at an auto parts store.

Last year, I bought my first 8N as a newbie. The owner was not terribly forthcoming on condition, but assured me that he'd replaced/rebuilt everything that needed it. After I had it for a bit, I changed the coolant, & discovered that there was no thermostat in the radiator hose. So I installed a thermostat simply enough, & then the water pump started dripping immediately, non-stop. (The absence of a thermostat was suddenly explained; no thermostat, no drip.) The water pump was thoroughly worn out. So I guess that'd may be be one non-scientific way to check the condition of the pump on the tractor--is there a thermostat installed? If you suspect the water pump is indeed bad, I wouldn't procrastinate regarding rebuild/replacement.
