8N oil pan hung up near fly wheel

Hi there everyone,

I recently started refurbushing a early 50's Ford 8N. The motor is frozen(and now full of PB blaster) , so I decided to remove the oil pan to take a looksee up in their and see what is going on. I got the pan knocked loose and managed to lower it about 3" when it got hung up on something near the flywheel, and it now refuses to come down any farther(I have removed all the bolts, as well as the oil drain plug). it easily wiggles back and forth, and is also easily jacked back up into it's orginal position. This is my first time working on something like this. I have all the manuels, and they say nothing about this to my knowledge. I have also searched the web with similar results. Has anyone else out their enountered this issue and resovled it? Thanks.

Being there is nothing there to hang up on, perhaps there is a piece of broken starter drive jammed between the flywheel and bellhousing. That would also make the motor seem stuck.

Will be interesting to see what you find.

If you're going to work on the motor, get a hoist and engine stand and split the tractor. It's probable that the clutch needs replacing
anyway. I split mine a while ago,got a Harbor Freight stand and used a chain hoist to lift the motor. You'll have to put a few bolts
in the pan so that it doesn't fall and crack while splitting.

The previous owner of the tractor said that it was running when he parked it about a year ago, so I can not imagine that it was a mechanical failure

The motor has rust in it without a doubt. We tried pulling it recently behind a pickup, with one person sitting on the tractor and working the clutch. The clutch worked fine, but the motor did not budge.

id you fully move the front axle out of the way? The flywheel is concave and the pan might be hanging up on the lip of the flywheel. It will need to move forward alittle to clear the flywheel.

I did not. I read at other places on this site that you can remove the oil pan with out taking the front axle off by blocking up
the radius rods. The way things are going though, I might go ahead and take the axle off anyway.

I would not attempt an in frame rebuild on that. Bolt the pan back up and split the tractor. Rebuild will be much easier with the engine on a stand. Harbor
Freight sells a good stand for a reasonable price. Or rent or borrow one.

ull the radiator hoses off if you have not already and knock the tie rod ends out of the steering arms and pull the radius rods and wheel it out and away.

How do you take the iol pan off without removing front axle when the oul pan is the frame that holds the axle on? Made same as my 41 9N and 44 2N. The NAA was same way as well.

You were right! I took the front axle off and the oil pan came(okay, so more like fell) right off. Thanks for the great advice.
Case closed.

Forget model year, means relatively nothing, so concentrate on if it is a front mount or side mount unit as there are differences with both but engine removal are the same. Get The ESSENTIAL MANUALS and read like your Bible. In it you will find all the major system R&R procedures as well as part numbers and sketches. You can try a 50/50 mix of Acetone and UTF for a good soaking solution.
