48 8N harder starting and today started then quit

Forum,
Have worked on 8Ns for years and today I need a forum update for what I have forgotten. 8N has plenty of gas, carb clean but hard starting and will not start at all today. I believe it may be the 6 volt coil, points, or condenser. Will check voltage to coil shortly. I have a coil but I am not sure of voltage 12 or 6.There are no markings on the extra front mount coil. Any and all input appreciated.

It's probably time for a tune up. To answer your question about the spare coil, measure the resistance from the top of the coil to the pig tail. If around 1 ohm, it's a 6 volt, if 2-3 ohms it's a 12 volt.

Jim,

First things first -
Got fuel?
Got good spark?
Got good volume of air?

I'd also just pop out the plugs and look at 'em. Maybe also just go over 'things' to make sure something obvious hasn't happened.

Sometimes we just take things for granted.

Are you using the OEM 6V/POS GRN system or a 12V switch over job? Mistake #1 regardless if a rookie or an oldie, is to guess as to what a problem is, and worse to start buying and replacing new parts without proper testing to determine the true root cause problem, ...I believe it may be the 6 volt coil, points, or condenser.... What do you mean on the extra front mount coil??? What extra coil??? There is but one coil on a distributor. How do you plan to check the voltage to the coil??? next, did the tractor run before you pulled the carb to rebuild if that is what you mean by 'clean carb'? Did it run after? If carb passes the fuel flow test, set carb idle screws to OEM factory rec'md settings, don't run, and leave alone. Move on to wiring. You must have correct wiring -starting; ignition; and charging systems all correct before you can fire up and adjust the carb. Tell us more technical details and don't yank anything off or buy any new parts yet. Are you using a 12V conversion? If so, did you: Swap out the 6V battery with a 12V GRP 35 unit; remove the GEN and the VOLTAGE REGULATOR from the circuit and replace with an ALT? Ballast Resistor in the system? Ensure the battery is fully charged (applies even if 6V)under load and has the correct battery cables, and a fan belt tensioning device attached? If you have the OEM 6V POS/GRN system, even if you had a 12V coil it would work fine. The OEM Ballast Resistor is used in both the 6V setup and a 12V setup. If you are running a 12V setup, you have the option of using your 6V coil but need to add an inline external 1-OHM Resistor to the coil wire. You can omit any extra resistor simply by swapping out the 6V coil to a 12V coil. BOTH still need to use the OEM Ballast Resistor as stated. The front mount distributor would be the next step. Have you messed with it? See post above.

Thanks for the replies. There was current to the coil. Checked the spark plugs for spark and observed zero spark. It has ample fuel.
Removed the coil and distributor yesterday and found the points slightly pitted. Bought new points and condenser today and installed them. Ordered a new coil from Yesterdays tractors parts today and expect it to arrive in a day or two.
Reason I wanted to know about 6 or 12 volt coils is I had a 12 volt system in another 8N. Should have marked it back then!
Thanks again for the replies.
