Fluids in my Ford 8N?

I am getting ready to change all the fluids in my Ford 8N. A friend of mine who has farmed for 40+ years told me to use 15-40 motor oil for diesel engines in it. He says he has used it in his 8N for years and it helps to prolong engine life. What say the 8N community? He also says use combination transmission-hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic well.

Yes to both.

I use 15w40 Shell Rotella year around here in VA.

Any UTF that meets the Ford spec M2C41D will work fine in your N tractor. Just read the label on the container.

I use the UTF from TSC year around here in VA.

You will find the UTF to work a lot better below 32* F than 80/90 w oil.

Use either Rotella or Delvac diesel oil if you want to save your engine from camshaft failure.Do not use the latest automotive oils, they lack the Zinc additive required for flat tappet lifters and cam wear.

The current level of phosphorous (the anti-wear element is not zinc - it is the phosphorus that comes with the zinc in the ZDDP additive) is more than adequate for the valve train on a 23HP low RPM flat tappet engine with 30# valve spring pressures. It is also a little higher than the levels you would have found in the vast majority of 1940-1960 engine oil formulations.

Honestly any oil that you can buy today far exceeds what was poured in your tractor the day it was new. The ZDDP package became a big deal a few years ago and a lot of it is just like how unleaded gas would ruin your tractors motor. As Bruce said you're dealing with valve spring pressure a little higher than a ball point pen working directly on a valve with no rocker arm to increase load. The diesel oils will work great and they are readily available for a good price. Mobil Delvac has a rebate program so you can save $5 a gallon.

I'm sure they are posted elsewhere, but I just read through the 75 tips. Good stuff. Thank you!
