8n steering box lube

(quoted from post at 16:51:01 03/02/21) this is the later 8n model how is the steering lubed? thanks
E fill is gear oil. Now with that said many guys put corn head grease into them now. They leak and the upper shaft bearing doesnt get oil thus dries up. I just rebuilt the box on my granddads tractor this past summer and even with new shafts and seals it weeps alittle gear oil.

I modified both the early and the late lube ports with an NPT (early) and a hex bolt (late) with Zerks to accept a grease gun (or oil) and make the job easier. The OEM Operator's manual says to remove the steering wheel acorn nut and pour oil down
the shaft. DON"T! You will just end up with an oil mess when it all leaks out.

NOTE: Early Box uses NPT Pipe Plug; Late Box uses 7/16 hex bolt. Both I modified with a Zerk fitting to allow easier lube insertion. I use 00 Cornhead Grease

So how does the upper bearing get lubed? My 48 8N is ok right now, but should I be lubing the upper bearing somehow?

They added a hole in the top of the tube above the bearing that one could put oil in! My 52 has it but my 50 does not! I rebuilt my 50 about 12 years ago so the bearing may be reaching it's age limit. Don't use it much anymore so it may outlast me!

I just did this fix with my leaky '49 8N's "self-draining" gearbox, & that's really the way to go! Bought the new Zerk fitting plug off of ebay.
