9N Marvel-Schebler poppet return spring

Hi-

Very occasional poster with quick questions.

1941 Ford 9N

6-year old battery died, replacement obtained, installed. Tractor out in the rain and snow for a few weeks in the meantime. Cranked would not start. No gas! Added what little there was in a can, probably need more. Still not starting, but past experience is to remove, drain, clean carb. Not worried about getting it started - famous last words, ha ha.

Began above removal/drain/clean procedure and noticed spring (poppet return spring according to the internet) was gone. Probably original - was old, rusty, not too springy. This is the two-inch plus spring that goes from lever on the carb forward to lever on the governor. Never really paid it much attention - remove, reinstall, repeat.

As I looked things over, my ignorance about the spring became evident. What does it do? Is it even NEEDED? It seems that the actions of the various levers on the carb and governor would not be affected by this spring, but that cannot be correct, right? For a replacement, would a comparable spring from a hardware or auto parts store work, or should I get the correct one from the tractor part suppliers?

TIA for any assistance.

This is the two-inch plus spring that goes from lever on the carb forward to lever on the governor." Never seen or heard of such spring or seen it in any manual or parts book. Sounds like a "farmerization".

Not doubting you, and thanks for the timely response. Maybe the item below goes elsewhere? There seems to be provision for spring attachment higher up on the vertical rod going up from the carburetor, to the throttle. Just dunno.

From the www:

Brian, the site owners block competitive links here so we can't see the target of your link, but, likely, it is of the teeny tiny spring that holds the flapper in the choke plate closed.

Obviously, the spring someone previously "improved" your tractor with had to be quite a bit larger than that!

For a better general idea of where the LITTLE spring goes, it's shown in the photo.

The choke plate in the photo is installed INCORRECTLY, though!!!

"There seems to be provision for spring attachment higher up on the vertical rod going up from the carburetor, to the throttle." That would be the governor compensating spring.

JMOR, wore out-

Thanks fellows. 25 years with a mystery spring in the wrong location... I have had this tractor, mostly running, since 1995. True story: It got pushed SIDEWAYS 25 feet when caught in the great Madison County VA rainstorm/debris flows of June 27, 1995, and the crankcase filled with crud and it still lives.

Maybe the spring was "moved" in the big flood. (Kinda doubt that - more like another owner/operator, er, mistake.)

Anyway, I will get a spring and put where it belongs, on the tractor.

Thanks again,

Brian
