aftermarket pto shafts

I recently purchased an aftermarket 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 pto shaft for my 2n. It arrived with crudely cut involute splines on the transmission end. It was returned and another ordered from a different supplier. It was virtually identical to the first. Looking online it seems there are multiple vendors selling this same shaft. I'm wondering how many get installed in tractors and are doing damage to the internal splines when the pto is loaded down. Does anyone know a source for an adaptor shaft with properly machined square splines on the trans end?

If it has involute splines of any quality on the end you have the wrong shaft. Should be SAE 6 parallel splines on external end and SAE 10 parallel splines on transmission end.

Hi and thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm aware of what splines should be on the shaft. Both shaft assemblies I received were sold as replacement shafts for ford 2n, 9n, 8n. Instead of the correct square 10 spline trans end, they had involute splines that looks like they were cut with a chainsaw. Because they were so roughly machined and would only contact the outer corners of the female splines they couldn't be used. There appears to be a lot of these being sold. One supplier said his was made in Turkey, the other said China. Both were identical down to the tooling marks. My guess is both came from India. My question is, where is a source of a U.S. made or at least correctly machined shaft. Thanks for any help.

This changeover is common and I would start with this site for the shaft. Many folks here have purchased them and AFAIK they are selling the correct shaft. There have been some concerns about spline fit but it was the correct spline. There are lots of other sources - Just 8Ns would be my first choice. They specialize in N-series tractors and know them well. I cant imagine Derek would be fooled into distributing something this wacky.

I just installed one purchased from this site for an 8N and had no trouble with it.

I also purchased one for a 901 from Just 8ns this summer and that was excellent as well.

(quoted from post at 17:40:31 03/03/21) FYI; It turns out that both shafts originated from Atlantic Quality Parts. Somewhat short on quality.

Not an unusual event. AQP is a large wholsaler of all sorts of automotive and tractor parts and in addition to retaili sales they supply parts at wholesale to many different retailers. At one point they were flooding the market with junk oil pump rebuild kits. I wound up getting three of them from three different resellers. They don't seem to be real concerned with whom they buy from as long as the price is right. Margins must be good because they will eat the junk returns with no questions asked.
