I think I have a bad starter drive. When I push the button it spins with out catching. After several times it catches. When it warms up I am going in. Do they stick closed and if so can it be loosened up.
Or do I buy new and replace ?

Michiel,Replace the antique kickin out drive4 with a new improved starter drive , while you have it out. You will be glad you did!

9N or 8N? Most times when the starter motor just click, click, clicks, when the pushbutton start is pressed, it is a weak or dead battery and should always be the first thing to check. If machine sets for longer than a week or so without being on a float charger like the DELTRAN Battery Tender (NOT a trickle charger) the battery will start to lose specific gravity. A hydrometer can test it but your trusty local starter/alternator shop guy can bench test it for a more accurate measurement with his special machine. Battery needs the cells to test with a hydrometer, so if you have a newer battery that has a sealed top, her may be glass eye to show green (good) or orange (bad). He can also test your starter, solenoid, generator, or alternator too. Don't go buying anything til you verify old is defective. FORD designed all major components to be rebuilt over and over and is always the first choice rather than buying anything new made in Cheena. If battery tests good, then next step is to get starter tested. It may be a bad solenoid - NOTE: 9N/2N starters did not use a solenoid, it began with the 8N model. Verify wiring is all correct. 99.98% of all non-starting issues are due to incorrect wiring whether if 6V or 12V.
