SHERMAN TRANSMISSION

I have a 1942 9-N Maybe 2-N -- My dad bought it new and always called it a 9-N. It has never spent a night outside--always shedded. It has the SHERMAN step up transmission. It is the cable unit with the big round black bulb. The tractor was overhauled 50 years ago and used very little since. I use it on a rear discharge finish mower. Here is the question--after that overhaul the Sherman never worked again--the Ford dealer said the Sherman was bad and they removed or unhooked it.
That is according to my memory going back over 50 years...Here is the deal---When that black bulb is pulled out---that was what put it into the higher speed--now with the bulb pulled out the tractor will not move-----WHAT DOES THAT MEAN---Is the SHERMAN IN OR OUT OF THE TRACTOR??? Thanks len in Michigan

Lenray, You say that when you pull the knob out the tractor won't move,(neutral) So that means the Sherman is still in it.and maybe has a bad high range.Or the cable is not shifting it all the way into high.

Thank you Den----So the Sherman is still in there--does that mean the cable is not pulling out far enough?? The tractor went in for a regular engine overhaul--no reason to split the tractor and unhook the Sherman--is that correct. The SHERMAN always worked perfect prior to the engine overhaul....So now when I pull out the knob it goes into neutral instead of going into the high range....

Can't prove what happened 50 years ago, but I suspect fowl play. Sounds like the dealer swapped your good Sherman for a bad one. The only way to know for sure is to split the tractor and pull the Sherman and see what's going on.

Lenray,I would try and lube the cable up with a lot of PB Blaster sprayed between the cable and housing with the straw on the nozzle. Then work it in and out, spray and work it daily for a while and see if you can get it to move farther out and change range.Other than that you will need to split it for a look see.

Den---Thanks for your time. I don't have a clue for what to look for even if I SPLIT THE TRACTOR. Maybe we had clutch work done when the overhaul was done; I just can't remember back 50 plus years.. So the Sherman is still in the tractor--could a part have been removed so the Sherman wouldn't work---OR because the Sherman can be shifted into a neutral position---DOES that mean the Sherman is complete....Sorry for all the questions....YOur help has been much appreciated..

Lenray,From what you say it sounds like it is in there but may not be shifting all the way.May be that the cable is hanging up not allowing it to shift all the way in to gear.Lube the cable every day for a few days and work in and out to see if it will free up.

I have an 8N with the cable shift over drive sherman. On my tractor you push the cable in to shift to overdrive, knob out is direct drive. Not sure why that would be different with a Sherman in the 9N? Do you have a Sherman underdrive possibly?

The 9N and the 2N are basically the same with really only the steering boxes changing and the electrical changing after s/n 12500 so model number means nothing. The house SHERMAN expert is KIRK(NJ) so he may chime in if he sees this. Do you have the OEM manuals? If not, you can get them at the other FORD N-Tractor site in the manuals forum. ALL scanned from original documents are offered as free downloads there. They are in pdf so you will need a version of Adobe or Equivalent, also for free, to use.

Hello Husker----My tractor is stored off site--checked it today. Mine is like your tractor. Out is in direct---PUSHED IN is overdrive.....thanks.....

Den----I gave you some incorrect info. When the knob is pulled OUT--I am in direct drive---when the knob is PUSHED IN it goes to neutral. It is pushed in as far as it will--there is a stop there.....

NEW INFO...When the knob is out it is in direct drive--when I push the knob all the way in it puts the Ford into NEUTRAL instead of overdrive as it did in the past.....

Lenray,Yeh I thought you maybe had things described backwards. Can you feel a detente in the movement of the knob going from direct maybe half way to overdrive then again in overdrive position. Do you hear any noise with it in all the way if so the dentals are bad on the slider gear.

It pushes in very hard----have to bump it with my fist. That being the case at present I just can't feel it moving in....lubing it as you mentioned.....

When knob is pulled out the access direct standard gears. Push the knob in to access the sherman step up or step down gear. Since this is a 9n/2n you will not be able to access from under the steering box like the 8n so other than a split the only way to lube is spraying thru the starter hole. As Den said I would try to lube first, Working it back and forth to see if it will engage. I might be possible that the rail is not moving completely in and out. Another possibly is that the bracket that holds the cable at the front of the case might be broken. My cable sherman shown in the link has a broken bracket. Another possibly might be a worn or broken shifter rail fork which might not allow full engagement. As Den said try the lube first a lot of times that will work because it's been sitting in one position for so long. If you have one of those bore scope cameras, I have one that hooks up to my I-phone, you might be able to access thru the starter hole to have a look see the operation. Other than that it will require a split.
