8n camshaft distributor gear

Hello all, through some trouble shooting Ive found that the distributor gear on the front of the camshaft is slipping.

My question is, whats holding this gear to the shaft? Is it just a press fit? Or is there a pin/key to help hold it?

Thanks!

I'm actually not sure, but think it is machined as part of the shaft. A much more common problem is a worn distributor gear. I've seen these slip timing from being worn. These are pressed on and pinned.

The camshaft gear is bolted to the camshaft.

HCooke, the gear I meant was the smaller gear at the end of the camshaft, in front of the 4 bolt camshaft gear.

It is a side mount distributor though...I dont know if they differ from the front mounts.

Thanks JMOR. Do you have any recommendations on how to go about fixing this? Such as do you think I need a new camshaft and cam distributor gear? Or would I be able to press the new gear on and be fine do you think? Or is there a way to save or pin the gear the way it is now?
