I have a 1947 8n. It starts fine and runs for about 5 min then sputters and stops.
I restart it and it starts, then sputters like it is running out of gas.
I pull the choke out and remains running.
I rebuilt the carb and it did not help. (same symptoms as mentioned above) Where did I screw up on the rebuild?
Thxs.

Michael Law,After it runs and dies,Fuel shutoff open 2 full turns.Have a wrench ready and immediately remove the plug in the bottom carburetor bowl and catch gas in a pint jar. Will it fill ma pint jar in 2 minutes or so? Post back results.

Will do. Also I checked the tank and pet cock, all clean.

Gas cap plugged?
Intake leak that opens when warm?
"Where did I screw up on the rebuild?"
You rebuilt the wrong item??
Have fun!
I am having fun when the 401 goes back up a wee bit with a new machine.

Aboute ten years ago one of my 8n's did the same thing. the stand pipe on top of the sediment bowl was partially plugged.

ikely either stuff in the sediment bowl inlet or the gas sealing up too good and your vent is plugged. Could be something else but I would start with those two.

OK, forget what the s/n, model year, and model you have -they don't mean anything. Focus instead on what is important. The FORD N-Series tractors all used the Marvel-Schebler carburetors, starting with the TSX-33 unit from '39-'49. In 1950 M/S introduced the improved TSX-241 unit and became FORD p/n 8N-9510. M/S carbs have a brass ID Tag riveted to the bottom base on the ping-pong paddle boss. What do you have? Next, Did you preform the Fuel Flow Test?

Probable NO-GO fuel issue causes are: plugged vent, plugged screens, plugged sediment bulb, dirty gas tank, dirty carb, and more. There are three OEM screens in the fuel system. Two are on the Sediment Bulb Assembly; the 3rd is on the brass elbow inside the carb where the fuel line connects to. SEE PICTURES. "Rebuilt the Carb" leaves a realm of questions but for time being test flow and all possible culprits of poor fuel flow. Carb issues often are the result of incorrect float setting (1/4" from nearest surface) and/or loose Needle Valve seat. Did you use the newer Vitron valve? issues usually are pugged screens, with the brass elbow fuel inlet screen being plugged up and/or the gas tank vent hole being plugged. These two are often the most neglected by fellas. The gas tank vent is on the top of tank, attached to the hood bottom, and requires a lot of work to remove it other parts to get to the tank and vent. 80 years of use can result in much dirt, rust flakes, and other debris settling in the tank and causing a plugged Bulb flow. Best solution is to remove the tank and thoroughly clean.
