What is the most common cause of oil getting in the water jacket,no indications of coolant in crankcase. Engine is from 51 or 52 8N, no freeze cracks in block. Engine is stuck, removed head and found indications of engine oil in water jacket. what could cause this?

hat indications did you find? Most common is combustion by-products and not oil. What is the cause of the engine being stuck? Blown head gasket and water in cylinders?

(quoted from post at 11:20:34 02/24/21) There is no indications of the head gasket being blown, it is oil, engine oil.
f it is engine oil, stehen the only way it can get there is from a cracked block.

Use a felt marker pen & write oil on the cap. That will make it look like it should be there. Maybe it was put there by accident? Is there a lot or just a film?

jtrovillion As R Geiger said, Most common is combustion by-products and not oil.Get some and rub it between your fingers ,then take a good wiff/smell or two.Does it smell like exhaust or the inside of a exhaust pipe?llol It can also be some residue from a stop leak like the old Bars leak that had a oily mixture in it.The only place that oil could be caused from is a cracked oil galley leaking into a water passage ,and that is very very unlikely. It is most likely the head gasket seeping compression into the water jacket.
