My 9N knocks in 3rd gear

So...I have a question about my 1939 9N. When I drive my 9N in 3rd...I get a knocking sound I believe in the tranny. I don't hear this in 1st or 2nd. This has been going on since I bought the tractor several years ago. Im thinking there may be a tooth damaged or broken off on the 3rd gear? Your thoughts? Do I have to split the tractor to change it? Tim

Timothy, John D. answered your question in your previous post. When the weather warms up enough for you, remove the top cover and have a peak. Then you can decide if you need to split the tractor or not.

I would be looking for missing teeth, shafts ends that can be moved up and down or side to side. Raise the rear wheels off the ground so you can turn the main shaft and bump the starter over to turn the counter shaft.

Thanks! I will check it out! :D
