Okay... I have a 1939 9N. I started it last night (0 degrees) to get ready to plow some some snow in IL. It started up just fine...I drove it over the where my snow blade was stored and returned to the shed with no problem (Hydraulic system worked just fine.). This morning (at 5 degrees) it started right up as usual...While in neutral, I raised the draft lever to lift the blade on the 3 pt hitch...after about 2 minutes the engine came to a sudden halt as if it locked up! I can start the engine with the clutch engaged. But as soon as I let off the clutch, the engine immediately stops. I disengaged the pto... It does the same thing! Have I broke something in the transmission? Is it the pto shaft? I've had this tractor a long time...I grew up on a farm and have worked on tractors my whole life, but have never had anything happen like this. where do I begin to diagnose this problem?

would suspect that the trans fluid has water in it and it froze.

Timothygil,It could have some ice in the transmission that chunks have gotten between gears .Try putting a good heater facing the transmission, electric milk house, torpedo magnetic ect.and see if it thaws it out.

Timothygil,One more thing,Be sure the transmission is in neutral and not hung in two gears at once.See if you can roll it a little bit say 6" with it in neutral.

I put a heater near the gearbox last night. We got an additional 6 of snow. I fired it up this morning...I turned the pto with a crescent wrench and it suddenly broke loose. Works like a champ! My drive is clear! You guys rock!

So...let me ask another question about my 9N. When I drive my 9N in 3rd...I get a knocking sound I believe in the tranny. I dont hear this in 1st or 2nd. This has been going on since I bought the tractor several years ago. Im thinking there may be a tooth damaged off broken in the 3rd gear? Your thoughts? Do I have to split the tractor to change it?

When and if my 2-N (3 speed)should ever develop a "knock" with in the Transmissions...I shall remove the housing as per the picture...and pin point the knock.

My Fathers 8-N Transmission...developed a knock......one day a large HOLE appeared on the front lower right side of the Transmission gear case..

Bob..Owner of several Tactors......one being a 2-N Ford...A great Tractor for what I use it for.....:)

I'd run the tractor a bit with some diesel in the tranny to mix up any water in there, drain it well, then put in some fresh Ford spec UTF.
