2N Hydraulic Pump Chatter

I have a 2N that sat for 8 years inside a garage with no lubricant in the rear differential or transmission. I have the engine running great, the PTO turns and the 3 point lifts and lowers.
My issue is that when maintaining a lifted load (mower) in a position, it sounds like the hydraulic pump is cavitating. The noise might be coming from something else but that is what it sounds like.

I am running just replaced Ford mineral oil 90 wt as recommended.

Any ideas? Hydraulic Pump Relief valve chattering? Like I said, the 3 pt lifts and lowers without hopping or stuttering. It's only when maintaining the lifted load in a position that the noise happens.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

The 9N/2N lift has two positions - fully up and fully down. At full up the control linkage is supposed to kick the intake valve back to the closed position which shuts the pump off and the oil trapped in the lift circuit holds it there. Check the linkage adjustments and verify the pump is being shut off when the lift comes to the top of its travel.

Where are you? Is it garaged? 90 wt. can be problematic in severe cold as a large part of our country is experiencing right now.

I’m also wondering what the local temps are like. I use 90wt in my 8N because it doesn’t do any winter work, but it’ll
absolutely chatter for the first 15-30 minutes of operation if it’s below freezing (I park outside) despite being otherwise
100% functional.

Dalesbebe ,It could also be from wear in the scotch yoke in the pump. That is quite normal in Ns with a lot of hours and won't hurt a thing, other than having to listen to the noise.Run it,or tear it down and replace it,your call.

All,

Thanks for each reply. I will let the forum know when I finally figure it out. You guys gave some good things to check on.

Hi Dalesbebe, your selection of the word
"chatter" vs "knocking" makes me wonder
if you are describing the valve guides
oscillating up and down hitting the
plug, then the socket. More a ticking
sound?
The quite version is when gravity holds
the guide down, and the valves are free
to slide up an down, without moving the
guide.

This chamber has .112 inch gap, when the
guide is down all the way, bottomed out
in the socket.
Maybe the combination of sitting 8
years, 90 wt, and winter temps, are
promoting the valves sticking to the
guides.
