Latest Project

This is our latest project. It's a 1950 8N that I acquired in 2012 right before our son was born. It belonged to my neighbor, who passed away shortly after he sold it to me. It was purchased new by his Mom with money she made growing pickles for the local pickle buyers. It was the only tractor they had on their 80 acre farm, which was across the road from my family's farm.

It last ran in the early 1990s.

I've had very little time to recreationally work on tractors since. This is my first project since the 2015 rebuild of my diesel. This winter has been mild enough that my 7 year old son and I have been able to do quite a bit of work on this one. About 3 weeks ago, we got it running again! It sounds great, and has excellent oil pressure at 25psi. I'm currently working on the breaks, but we're currently waiting out the cold weather that has settled over Minnesota recently.

I was about to pull one of my forgotten N's in it has not been ran in 7/8 years are more. I am gonna give it to my son-in-law. I must have left the gas cap off its ruined the fuel tank. When I rebuilt the engine it needed a head all I had was a 9N head I plan to swap it out for a 8N head before I give it to'em... I got a head out its been laying out under a shed for at least 5 years : (...

About the time I got the ambition and a free work bay this comes along. Its about the worst trans I have ever pulled it took me a day to get it out rust was a big issue. Now that I have it out a rebuilt trans is several weeks out...

Glad you got that trans out!

We had to put in a rebuilt E4OD in our '97 Powerstroke summer before last. Cost more than the truck did. Stinking electronics!

Hope you get to that N sometime soon :)

"rust was a big issue".
Years ago two brothers and I drove a "Rambler American" to California. We were having problems with a break sticking so we took it to a garage. They put it on a lift and they saw for the first time the bottom of a car driven in Minnesota winters. Every mechanic in the place had to come and look at all the rust under the car. They were all joking and yucking it up at our expense. I didn't get the joke. :)

Glad to see you're making a mechanic out of your son. Take him fishing and you will have created a double header monster he will thank you for for the rest of your life. Nothing like teaching a youngster how things work and how to fix them. Teaching him mechanics teaches him how to work. Teaching him fishing teaches him how to loaf. I'm pretty fair at both!
Good Luck on the restoration!

Hi Colin,

I have 2 8Ns waiting for serious work. I had planned to have grandsons involved in their reincarnations. But nnalert plus their changing interests have gone nowhere for the 8N projects.

I have modified an old brake drum lathe for skimming the worst out of the brake drums. The drums are too thin for taking much off, and most brake lathes will not work with the large center hole of the 8N drums. If you need that kind of help, then we have a good reason to get together, which would be great.

Meanwhile, stay warm, stay healthy, keep loving the wife and son, and enjoying the projects. Soon it will be Spring weather and things get awful busy.

Thanks, Paul, I will keep that offer in mind.

Stay warm! Looks like tonight and tomorrow night are going to be the coldest. -30 Sunday night.

I live in the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes, but I'm afraid I'm not much of a fisherman. I did take my son out spearfishing winter before last in a darkhouse and we caught a beautiful Northern Pike. We had a delicious supper that evening!

That's too funny! I lived in the Southwest for the better part of a decade right after high school. When I first moved out there I was amazed by all of the "old" cars on the road. As you well know, anything over 10-15 years in Minnesota starts to have a pretty serious patina. :)
