6 volt generator

A friend of mine is working on his 8n. He bought a new generator as his original is shot. What he bought is a FDS 298 6 volt 1 wire generator. (at least that's what I think he bought. Apparently this was supposed to be an upgrade---. Anyway he is having a difficult time figuring out how to wire this generator. Should it be grounded to negative or positive? Any help along with a drawing would be awesome. Thanks,

It will operate with either positive or negative ground. You chose grounding and polarize the generator to match.

"Apparently this was supposed to be an upgrade"

It would be interesting to hear "The Rest of That Story"!

Early or late 8N?

Front or side distributor?

An upgrade? Seriously?

It's a one wire generator!

It's for a 2 or 9N with out a voltage regulator.

So, to make it work on an 8N, you will need to wire it w/ a cut out and not the v/r.

That's hardly an upgrade.

That generator, if indeed that is what he bought, is for 9N/2N. The part numbers that it is supposed to replace would indicate that it is like the last version of the 2N generator. If the tractor is really a 8N (4 speed and both brake pedals on the right side and only the clutch on the left, big nut in center of axle holding hub to axle) that is not the right generator. 8Ns use a three wire generator and a voltage regulator. 9N/2N (except for very early 9N I've been told) use a 1 wire generator and a cutout. so you need to know for sure if it is a 1 wire generator and is it a 9N/2N or 8N. Then if the generator is right for the tractor it will be possible to find a suitable wiring diagram. Otherwise it may be necessary to exchange the generator.

Any chance he could be talking about a 1 wire 6 volt alternator, Ebay has them for sale? No picture, so who knows what it is, unless that part # means something.

So much missing and wrong info so I'll start with this. What the heck is a FSD 298??? That's NOT a FORD part number. We will assume you are talking about an N-SERIES Tractor. Which Model? 9N/2N or 8N or NAA? Next, did you motor test the old GEN? No? Then why do you say it is "shot"? ALL Ford OEM parts were designed to be rebuilt over and over for one thing. All 9N (after s/n 12500)and ALL 2N Models used the same 1-Wire/3-Brush 11 AMP, A Circuit Design GEN's with a roundcan cutout. Does the GEN have a belt tension device? Do you have the ESSENTIAL MANUALS? No? then how do you plan on setting up and verifying the wiring is all correct? Just because you have a 6V battery (do you) don't assume it is wired correctly. Same with a 12V. There is much involved in the electrical wiring system so if you don't know don't think you can fly by the seat of your pants. GEN;CUTOUT; BALLAST RESITOR; AMMETER; STARTER MOTOR; SWITCH; DISTRIBUTOR; AND MORE. Do you have the OEM GEN still? Send me pictures and I might buy it.
