8N wiring issues

I have an old 8N ser # 466xxx, a 1952 6v machine that has ran well until a 2 month stay out in the weather. I'm not a mechanic but I changed plugs, points, condenser, rotor, coil, carburetor, voltage regulator, starter solenoid and battery. It was not my intention to do a wholesale parts swap but one thing led to another and stuff was deteriorated. I have everything back together and am ready to put the bonnet back on it but the starter kicks in with the key off or on, without touching the starter button as soon as the battery cables make contact. I noted all wire positions when I started and I think they are all straight. I made my own harness after getting wrong fitting ones twice. Can somebody tell me where I went wrong?

It is normal for them to roll over key on or off when you push the
button. Not normal of course, before you push the button.
Make sure the small wire going to the push button is not grounded.
I have also had the solenoids get stuck and cause that symptom.
Tapping them with a screwdriver handle sometimes fixes it.
Probably wouldn't hurt to verify it is the right solenoid and installed
the right direction too, but that doesn't normally cause this symptom.

Three terminal solenoid, with small terminal facing the block. If the small terminal is grounded, the solenoid will engage.

Thanks for the info Royse. I think it is solenoid related. I tapped on the solenoid with a screw driver and now I get nothing. So I put the old one back on and again, nothing. I bulled the smaller wire off the solenoid and I found it grounded. When I pulled off the wire at the starter button the ground was towards the button. The wire was clean, no ground. Is the Button supposed to read a ground?

It should ground the wire when you push the button down.
But only when you push it down. Otherwise you should have battery voltage there.

It looks like you have covered the bases. I it definitely a problem with the starting circuit going to ground when the battery cable is attached. It can be from the solenoid, push button starter or the ignition switch. Fortunately, all can be tested with an ohm meter it identify the source. Then, it could be the circuit item, or a hot wire going to ground within the circuit. Sounds like a lawn chair 6 pck job to me.

So I need to rebuild the button?

With the wire disconnected, you could try spraying some cleaner
up in it under the cap and working it several times, then check for
ground with an ohmmeter. If that doesn't work, the transmission
top has to come off to get it out, so I would just replace it.
They're not much money.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I am recently retired so this is life now, trying to breathe life into a tractor older than me.

if you havae to take the top of the trans off do not losse the detent spring at the back of the cover. sometimes it will try and stick to the cover and then fall of into the trans. Ball bearing under the spring!

Good to now that, thanks.
