I want to convert my Front mount distributor square coil to a round coil , using an old square coil, gutting it and soldering leads to the points lead and high tension terminal inside the old square coil , I have read it can be done. A round coil is then mounted on the side of the tractor with the wires going to the square coil on top of its regular spot. But Im stumped on how you get an old square coil apart without breaking it, any one ever done this ?

one several. The very oldest was easiest, as the tar-like potting was hard, cracked & easy to remove. The most difficult was only a few weeks old and was epoxy filled. With top removed, I drilled, drilled, drilled some more and then Dremel & chisel, and finally resorted to cutting 'windows' in the sides, near bottom to drill into sides. Eventually got it done & epoxyed the windows back in. Hobo, a regular here & real mechanic, came up with a scheme to avoid guts removal....strategically drill thru top to bottom and wire thru drilled holes.

I have a gutted out coil I will mail to you for shipping only. I used it for a while. It worked but keeping the points dry and uncorroded was
a problem so a went with a pertronix setup. If you want my old coil, send an email.

I would love to have it if you email your address to [email protected], I will follow up with you , Thank you

If you drilled thru the coil from top to bottom, and ran the wires thru the holes to connect to the springy point contact and the other spot where the coil high tension lead goes, how did you disconnect the old innard coil to those terminals, wouldn't that cause problems if left connected ?

don't recall Hobo ever explaining how he dealt with disconnecting the coil wire from the HV tab, but yes, I would think that leaving that connected might very well be a problem. When you pull top off, it is easy to disconnect from top screw terminal and as to pigtail, I see no problem leaving that connected, since now it should just be floating & connected to nothing else, assuming that he somehow got that coil wire disconnected from the HV tab.
