Put a new 6 volt coil on it a couple years ago...Helped the 'won't

start after turned off hot" ... problems...New battery a couple

years ago..Runs really well, it does lose oil pressure after a

half hour of bushhog...

So it started up yesterday ok..ran it for an hour bushhogging,

Turned it off and on half a dozen times..no problem...Went to

put it in the shed..stopped to pull the tarp back and it dies..

bang..dead..At that time I wasn't worried but thought it was

kinda abrupt..and I couldn't get it started...starter turned it over

ok until the battery started to run down..Ended up pushing it

into the shed..Put the float charger on that it always has hooked

up..This morning, deader than a door nail...mulit meter shows

24 volts across the posts...I'm not sure I'm reading it correctly.

Any ideas?...gas out the bottom of the carb ok..

The number one cause of a weak spark is a weak battery.

Your battery is stone cold dead.

And it may have a bad cell which could have been your problem all along.

See tip # 49. Until you get a fully charged battery in there, it's not much use to check anything else.

Specific gravity should be 1.265 in each cell. Fully charged id 6.35 volts.

Even with a 5 volt reading the battery is dead?

Dang! 100 dollar battery only lasted 2 years..

even with a float charger on it..

That is the reason I converted mine to 12 volts a few years ago, the last three 6 volt batteries I had would only last 2 years or less, even with a tender. The 12 volt in it now is 6 years old and has never been on a tender, plus my jeep, truck and tractor uses the same size battery, I put the newest in the jeep and the oldest goes in the tractor. The battery may die tomorrow, but it is a $49.00 battery from wally world.
Also before I changed to 12v, I could run the tractor all day and go out the next morningand it would not spin the strater, I could clean the cables or put it on a charger for a few minutes and it would fire up. The best $130.00 I spent for the conversion kit.

I've read all the existing electrical components need to be taken

out, that they won't take 12 vote system. At one time or another

I've read the process..seems pretty straight forward..I think YT has

kits..

Wonder how I would detect such a drain? Not too many places for

that to happen..Replaced the ignition switch last year..Will replc the

solenoid..And buy another battery. See what happens...

The most likely place for it to drain is the cut out in the v/r.

Chances are you have a bad v/r or generator and your battery was only charging w/ the float charger.

Why would you replace the solenoid?

Rather than replace the battery, why not test it or have it tested?

Likewise, if you want some help on testing the rest of the charging circuit, just ask. Unless you plan to " fix it" with a 12v conversion.

I'm in New England and plow snow with my 9N. It's original 6V + ground.

From Carquest, I put in the largest 6V battery with most CCA I could fit through the access in the hood. It's a real PITA to install/remove. The last one lasted 8 years, the one in it now is 7 years old.

The tractor turns over fine, even a 0 oF. It only won't start if I flood it. If I put a dipstick oil heater in it usually won't flood if I do my part.

The battery is not responding to the float charger..24 hrs...

If it won't charge then whether the generator or voltage regulator

are working incorrectly isn't known...When I get it running how

do I use a multi meter...and a new digital mm is in the mail..

to check the charging? tia...

Red1,Your new multi meter may not reed voltage correctly with the engine running.Do electrical noise from plug wires ect.Answer is a old style analog meter that will read it.
