I have not seen one like that but it appears to be a sintered metal particulate filter of the type commonly found in carburetor inlets. This one is shaped to fit in a fuel line sediment bowl presumably to catch particles too small or light to settle out.

It's a filter.

In an N sediment bowl, the gas flows into the bowl, fills it up, then it passes through the filter( the screen) into the fuel line to the tank.

If the top of the bowl is designed for that filter, it should work ......assuming that it was designed for a gravity system and does not restrict the flow.

hat is an old Carter logo. You'll see that on there early products.

They were called "(ceramic)stone filters" back in the day.

Yours is missing the spring that holds the "stone" up against the gasket.
